Zimbabwe opens first biofuel production facility

Zimbabwe has opened the first biodiesel plant in its territory. Considered the fifth largest one in the world, the plant was built in Transload, 15 km north of the capital Harare. The capital came from a joint venture of Zimbabwean and South-Korean companies and is expected to produce about 100 million liters of biodiesel per year from wheat, soy and sun-flower seeds.

It is expected that this plant will help the country save $80 million in imported oil. Something very necessary for a country which is currently under international sanctions against president Robert Mugabe.

Zimbabwe ramping up for biodiesel production

We found one more gem in today’s announcements of new biodiesel production facilities. The southern African country Zimbabwe is preparing for biodiesel production by buying jatropha seeds, a drought-resistant plant which is rich in oil, the Zimbabwe Herald reports. The plant is found in abundance in an area of Zimbabwe, and the government is asking the people to gather the seeds in the forests, instead of waiting for donated or government aid. A local legislator heralded the program as a way to make money, emphasizing that women should be at the forefront of the jatropha program.
