It's Friday: Let's worry about 2070's hydrogen supplies

Currently, hydrogen is the most common element in the universe. But if Ford gets its way, we'll have to rethink our science texts in the coming decades. At least, according to The Onion we might.

In yesterday's Onion Radio News piece, anchor Doyle Redland talked about the new Foresight, a hydrogen-powered SUV from Ford. As Bill Ford says in the piece, "The 11-ton Foresight will be unaffected by the price gouging whims of OPEC as it uses water electrolysis to gather fuel from the oceans and the fresh mountain air." The one problem is that this one model is expected to use up all of the world's hydrogen supplies by 2070. Of course, by then, we might be in the stars and can collect hydrogen from space.

Remember, it's all a joke, and an old one at that. This article was first published a few years ago and talks about a Fall 2004 rollout of the Ford Foresight. Still funny, though.

The Onion asks about biofuels negative effect on the environment

Filed under: Biodiesel, Etc., Ethanol, Green Daily

Whether it's the University of Minnesota losing biofuel research funding or the UK government asking for more information before moving forward, the critical report in Science has had quite an impact on the public's thinking about ethanol and biodiesel. Even if the distinction between cellulosic or algae biofuels and biofuel made from things like corn are not totally understood by everyone, a bad rap is settling in. The fake news reporters over at The Onion have found three people to give their opinion on what it all means. One's off to the right, the others are available in yesterday's American Voices section.

Higher MPG? Who cares, if we don't have a flying car

Filed under: Etc., Hybrid, Green Daily

Mean Automakers Dash Nation's Hope For Flying Cars

I think I have a new can't-fail interview technique for the next gathering of auto reps I visit: badgering them. The clip above is from the new Onion, and shows the "anchor" not giving two rips about improved fuel efficiency (or Ford's SYNC option) once he finds out that neither Ford, GM or Toyota are going to deliver a flying car. This is the kind of thing we more often post on Fridays, but, hey, I assume you like to laugh on Tuesdays, too, right?

And as a side note, the clip is sponsored by Ford. Therefore, the ad following the bit is for the Ford Escape hybrid SUV. Irony or product placement?

For more humor, check out a classic bit of comedy (slightly NSFW if stuff shown on Jay Leno isn't appropriate for your workplace) from Dante and Randal of Kevin Smith's Clerks. Our two heroes discuss just how far one should go in search of the flying car.
