Paris 2008: Ssangyong C200 concept on the stand

Click to see more of the Ssangyong C200

The preview sketches of the latest Ssangyong concept vehicle, the C200, made it look like a squat little car. In fact, it looked pretty much like a station wagon. Now that the wraps have been taken off of the real thing in Paris, we can see that the SUV/CUV moniker wasn't inaccurately applied to this vehicle that sports a less aggressive look than the Actyon concept unveiled in Geneva earlier this year.

Aside from a more accurate knowledge of the C200's appearance, not much else new has been given out by the Korean automaker. The 2.0 liter diesel that's good for 175 hp is still there, and Ssangyong repeats the claim that the engine will meet Euro V emission requirements and will produce "lower CO2 levels." More details after the jump.

At the upcoming Paris Motor Show, Korean automaker Ssangyong will show off a new concept compact SUV called the C200. This is Ssangyong's first SUV with front-wheel drive and monocoque construction (as opposed to body-on-frame design), something that Ssangyong hopes will give customers another reason to check out its goods. While we know the C200 has a 175 hp diesel engine, there's sadly no mention that Ssangyong's diesel-hybrid powertrain will be available in the C200. The company does say the C200 is "environment-friendly, with low CO2 emissions, conforming with EURO V European exhaust emissions regulations." We'll need to wait until early October, probably, for detailed numbers. More information after the jump.

Phoenix Motorcars website gets a makeover, savings calculator

Phoenix Motorcars, the company behind the much-anticipated electric SUT with the SsangYong body and Altairnano battery has given their website a fresh look in anticipation of increased traffic. Set to finally begin building their vehicles for fleet customers and take a few retail orders, the company from Ontario, California has rolled out the welcome map with a fresh set of pixels and features.

The feature I was just having fun with was the savings calculator. You tell them the cost of the vehicle you're thinking of buying, it's gas mileage, and a few other variables and POW!, they give you a graph that shows you how long it will take to get some serious return on your investment. If you like the results you can sign up to reserve one of these for yourself.

Bonus video: For a short video of their plant and a bit of a test drive, hit the jump.

Most of our readers might not know SsangYong except that one of its models, the SUT, is used as the basis of the Phoenix Motorcars electric vehicles. Well, SsangYong has released more information about their new hybrid powertrain. During the Geneva Motor Show, the Korean marque didn't show a complete car but a model of the powertrain, which could be added to their current lineup of diesel engines (some of Mercedes origin). The pack meets the Euro IV norms and adds 30 kW (40 HP) to a standard diesel powertrain. The electric part of the powertrain uses a 340 V battery which is mated to a mild hybrid system that allows the engine to shut off at stops and supply power when accelerating.

SsangYong announced that fuel savings will be around 25 percent, with a NOx reduction of 10 percent. When will all this be available? SsangYong said 2010.

Geneva '08 Preview: SsangYong to show off diesel-hybrid SUV

SsangYong is a Chinese-owned Korean vehicle manufacturer, primarily of trucks and SUVs that are best known for their ability to make people look away in horror. In recent years, they have managed to create some of the most aesthetically-challenged vehicles on the planet. Readers of this site will probably be familiar with one of Ssangyong's less scary vehicles, the Actyon. The Actyon rolling chassis in SUV and pickup forms is the basis of the Phoenix Motorcars electric vehicles. At the Geneva Motor Show next month, Ssangyong is planning to join the stream of other manufacturers and show off a vehicle with a diesel-hybrid powertrain. So far, there are no details about the type of system, or even which vehicle will be used. SsangYong is saying that it expects a thirty percent bump in fuel efficiency, though.
