A human-powered Ferrari for under 200 bucks

Well, what did you expect, an F430 Scuderia? In fairness, you'll get around the city or your college campus a lot easier with this. It's the Ferrari skateboard, available from the Ferrari Store, where you can buy everything short of hemorrhoid medicine emblazoned with the iconic prancing horse. The grip tape on the topside is broken up by the Ferrari logo, while a peek at the deck's underside reveals a red primary theme with Italian national colors and the horse badge accenting things. Want one? Shell out around $170 bucks, and you can have your very own Ferrari -- perhaps the greenest one ever -- four wheels and all. Only this one wont bankrupt you at the gas pump. Thanks to Alex T. for the tip!

Meet the iSlide, a Segway-like skateboard concept

No too long ago, we showed you a one-wheeled machine that used accelerometers and a gyroscope to interpret your body movements into motion. That DIY machine was operated on the same principles as the Segway. Here is another version of this concept, this one powered by a hydrogen fuel cell. Designed by Ofir Tal, a recent graduate of Israel's Hadasa College, the iSlide also houses lights at the front for travel at night. With a top-speed of 15 kilometers per hour, don't expect to get anywhere too quickly, but that doesn't really seem to be the point of this exercise anyway. The machine is made up of "Epoxy and fiberglass, polyurethane, magnesium and titanium and rubber inserts." The idea seems more akin to a much simpler and less expensive alternative transportation device than the Segway, but one which offers some cool technology to those who have moved past their skateboards. I'd like to give it a try. You?

It's Friday: 30 MPH on an electric skateboard

Weight is an important factor to consider when choosing a vehicle. So, while we admire the electric razor scooter, the lightest vehicle is probably the electric skateboard. The skateboard saves on weight by doing away with the scooter's control bar. While there is a model called Hover Board, Back to the Future 2 fans will be disappointed to hear it doesn't actually hover. The video above is a news report about that model, which can go as fast as 30 MPH but costs $700.

You can buy other electric skateboards for as little as $200 but that one will only go 9 MPH. There is a more expensive model that goes 15 MPH. Those skateboards come with a remote to control speed and braking. They can carry 150 pounds 15 miles per charge. They run on two 9 volt batteries. At just 75 pounds, we think it may be the lightest electric vehicle on the market. We are still searching for electric rollerblades though. If you are crazy enough to try this, please wear a helmet.

Futurecar report on the GM "Skateboard" car on YouTube

Discovery channel has been running a four part series called FutureCar for the past few weeks and one of the segments focused on the GM Skateboard chassis that was first shown a few years back, featuring fuel cell power and complete by-wire controls. A variation of the Skateboard is used on the Sequel concept.

The segment doesn't delve too deeply into the technology, but instead focuses on a group of design interns . They were with tasked developing some new concepts that took advantage of the packaging flexibility afforded by low profile chassis and electronic controls. The Ford HySeries Drive system is similar in concept, minus the by-wire controls, and the Airstream concept was also designed to showcase packaging flexibility, even if the aesthetics were questionable.
