RACE report shows that LPG is a viable solution

Filed under: Natural Gas, European Union

The Real Automóvil Club de España (RACE) as well as its German counterpart ADAC, have released a complete report defending the use of LPG (Liquiefied Petroleum Gas) as a viable alternative to gasoline. The complete report (which you can download following the link below) states that LPG is a reasonable solution for the following reasons:
  • Reduces CO2 emissions to diesel-car levels, 15 percent less than gasoline cars.
  • Produces 96 percent less NOx than diesel cars, and 68 percent less than gasoline cars.
  • Produces 99 percent less particulates than diesels.
  • Reduces noise levels by 50 percent.
  • Costs up to €4 per 100km less than gasoline, and €1.75 less than diesel (for Spain).
However, LPG has always raised the concern about safety, as the older conversions used butane and propane bottles which were known to explode. The RACE report crash tested an Opel Astra SW fitted with an LPG tank where the emergency tire is placed with positive results. Rear impact didn't affect the tank, and the valves installed allowed discreet release of the gas in case of fire.

Video: Ron Paul on ethanol subsidies "I don't think we should do that"

Filed under: Ethanol, Flex-Fuel, AutoblogGreen Exclusive, Legislation and Policy

What does Ron Paul think about ethanol subsidies? Ron thinks they are unconstitutional and that allowing farmers to raise hemp is the right solution. Here is Ron's full response, as you can see in the video above, to the question "What are your views and policies on subsidizing ethanol farmers?":

What is my view on subsidizing ethanol and farmers? Under the constitution, there is no authority to take money from one group of people and give it to another group of people for so called economic benefits. So, no, I don't think we should do that. Besides, bureaucrats and the politicians don't know how to invest money. Then that money gets invested for political reasons rather than for economic reasons. I think there is a chance you might get more ethanol if you raised hemp but hemp is illegal in this country. So, in my idea of a free society, you'd be, a farmer would be allowed to raise hemp and not only would that be a good product, possibly to make ethanol, there might be a whole lot of other products you can make with hemp like Canadians do it. So, I am looking to legalize freedom, not more subsidizes and more direction of investments through the federal government because they are incapable of knowing the best investment to make.

What do you think, readers?

Mythbusters to bust myth electric cars are slow in episode next season

Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Green Culture, Green Daily

The Record Bee caught up with the Mythbusters (Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman) and crew at the Lake County's fairgrounds and Infineon Raceway in Sonoma Wednesday. What are the Mythbusters busting? According to the show's producer, they are filming an episode, to air next season, on busting the myth that electric cars are slow. The episode will include races between electric and gas; ATVs, go-carts and cars. Here is MythBusters Associate Producer Eric Haven talking about the episode:

A lot of people have a pre-conception that electric vehicles are slower than gas-powered vehicles. We're going to bust that myth. ... Today we're testing ATV's. We have a gas-powered one and an electric one. Tomorrow it's go-carts, and then cars.

The Record Bee also writes the Mythbusters tried to get a gas- and electric-powered Polaris ATV but did not mention the type of car or go-cart. Full disclosure, Jamie Hyneman help develop an electric ATV and I have not been too positive on the show in several articles.

Editor's note: we can bust this myth right now by talking to Michael Kadie or Dennis "Kilowatt" Berube or Gale Banks or ...

Video: I'm not racist, I drive a Prius

Here's a joke from the show New Adventures Of Old Christine. Christine, played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus, is accused of being racist by Barb. Christine says she cannot be racist because she drives a Prius. Do racists hate good gas mileage? She also says "I love gay causes. I use to drive a Miata." Funny stuff from the episode "The other F word." This is not the first time hybrids have come up the show.

Take this summary for the episode Crash: "When Christine's environmentally-friendly hybrid car and Marly's gas-guzzling monster SUV hit one another, it becomes a bigger dispute than simply who hit whom. While her car is in the shop, Christine is forced to go against her principles and rent a luxury SUV when no other car is available." I will look out for a repeat. Until then, enjoy this commercial with Christine getting in her Prius.

Drag-racing, sunwise

While a vehicle speeding down 250 yards in 57 seconds doesn't sound very fast, it's the hare beating the tortoise when the 'vehicle' is powered by the sun.

The winner was Brooks Solar and the contest was the second Annual Solar Drag Race. Held in Wenatchee, Washington, it is currently the only drag race in the world whose vehicles are all powered by solar power. That's pure sun-power, too; the contestants were forbidden to even use batteries to start their engines.

Other competitors included Chehalis High School and Central Washington University which won in their respective categories. Prizes included college scholarship worth $1,000 by solar cell producer REC Silicon.
