Production Mitsubishi Concept-cX will highlight new eco direction

Mitsubishi wanted the world to see that it had plenty of green intentions at least year's Frankfurt Motor Show. Thankfully, those hopes and dreams appear to be turning into reality, as the Concept-cX crossover has now been approved for production. As was initially shown in the concept vehicle, a brand-spankin' new 1.8 liter clean turbodiesel engine will make its debut in the new crossover. From there the power will be sent through a dual clutch SST transmission and the all-wheel-drive system lifted from the latest Lancer Evolution. Of course, to meet the future Euro-V emissions regulations, a diesel particulate filter is fitted to clean up the exhaust stream.
The new cX should fit well into Mitsubishi's product portfolio, right under the current Outlander in both size and price. We can't say for certain, but considering that the two vehicles share a platform, we can reasonably expect to see this same drivetrain mounted in the even friendlier Lancer platform in the future. We can only hope that the cX and its diesel engine will make its way stateside.

Detroit Auto Show: More on Mitsubishi 50-state turbo-diesel

Filed under: Diesel, Mitsubishi, Detroit Auto Show

We're going to be waiting about five years for the $30,000 Tesla sedan; maybe a little less for the Chevy Volt, but Mitsubishi thinks in 2010 people will be clamoring for their clean turbo diesel. Maybe they're right. The diesel announcement is sort of buried under Mitsubishi's headline 2008 Lancer Sports Sedan and Prototype X debuts, but this is what we feed on at AutoblogGreen, so we caught it.

Starting later this year (sometime in the fourth quarter), Mitsubishi will sell the Lancer sports sedan with the VAG-supplied 140 ps – 2.0 l Pump Jet Diesel in Europe. This will be upgraded to a "new powerful turbo-diesel variant" that will be available on both sides of the pond in, well, 2010.

This next-generation turbo will be based on the Euro-5 diesel engine that Mitsubishi is currently developing with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd for European export models. It has a diesel particulate filter (DPF) and NOx trap catalyst system, and will be compliant with U.S. Tier II Bin 5 emissions. You can read all that Mitsubishi has revealed about this engine after the jump and, since the announcement came with the Prototype X concept new, we're throwing in pictures of that car as well.

Detroit Auto Show: Mitsubishi will build small diesel by 2010

Filed under: Diesel, Honda, Mitsubishi, Nissan, AutoblogGreen Exclusive, Detroit Auto Show

Just before he introduced the new 2008 Lancer, Mitsubishi chairman Takashi Nishioka announced that the company is working on a new 4-cylinder diesel engine for its C-segment vehicles. The engine will be developed with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, which has an extensive inventory of diesel engines for a variety of heavy- and light-duty industrial applications. Many of the engines already meet European emissions standards. To be legal in the U.S., the engine will have to meet Tier 2, Bin 5 standards. Nishioka said the engines will be available for 2010 model year in the Lancer sedan and Outlander CUV. No other details were available but Mitsubishi is the latest company to announce upcoming diesel products. Honda and Nissan are also on record with plans.
