New York 2008: We sit down with Milner Motors to talk AirCar and ElectriCar

Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Hybrid, AutoblogGreen Q & A, AutoblogGreen Exclusive, New York Auto Show

When we first encountered the Milner Motors ElectriCar yesterday, we just did a quick flyby with out cameras and then headed off to other events. Later in the afternoon, we returned for a 15 minute chat with Chris Milner, the AirCar inventor's son and a partner in the company. He talked about the design of the car, the potential roadmap from this early prototype stage to a production vehicle and why this is so much like the AirCar with its wings lopped off. And yes, Milner's AirCar and the MDI Air Car are two different beasts. Chris said he's more than aware of the credibility issues involved when you try to build a flying car but, should the ElectriCar make it to production, the profits could be used to fund further development of the Air Car. Get ready.

Sitting still next to the Milner AirCar in the back of the New York Auto Show is the Milner ElectriCar. As we wrote in February, the ElectriCar uses an 11kWh battery and two 15hp electric motors to go for 120 miles without the 125cc engine coming on. We'll be speaking with Milner later today to get some details, for now we offer you some pictures of this unusually long vehicle. Some of the aspects of the ElectricCar that stuck out in my mind are the headlight wings and the center-mounted back-up/tail light. Whaddya think of the look?

New York '08 Preview: Milner ElectriCar plug-in hybrid

Some of you may recall the AirCar that was created a couple of years ago by Milner Motors. Well, to date, the Milner AirCar has yet to reach lift-off velocity and has only managed to roll around on solid ground. Now the Milner team has sliced off most of the wings and is preparing to install a plug-in hybrid power-train to create the ElectriCar. The specs for the ElectriCar list an 11kWh battery which provides energy to a pair of 15hp electric motors which turn the rear wheels. Milner claims the car can run electrically for two hours or 120 miles before the 125cc engine switches on to charge the batteries. According to the website, Milner has contracted a company to do safety engineering work on the ElectriCar so that it can meet federal safety standards. Milner will apparently be at the New York Auto Show next month, so we'll be looking into how real this thing really is.
