Frankfurt could bring two Mercedes S-Class hybrids

We already brought you news the other day that Mercedes is set announce a diesel hybrid version of the big S-Class sedan in September at the Frankfurt Motor Show. It now appears that a gasoline hybrid will be sitting alongside it on the stand under the three-pointed star. At the Frankfurt show in 2005, Mercedes also showed both gas and diesel hybrid versions of the S-Class but didn't provide much detail aside from the electric motor being integrated into the drive-train.

This tends to point in the direction of a new application of the Two-Mode hybrid being developed by GM, DCX and BMW, although it may also be mild hybrid that Mercedes is developing just with BMW. Either way, it looks like Mercedes will not follow Lexus's lead by using the hybrid to enhance power like the LS600h. Instead, the gas hybrid will slot into the middle of the lineup mated to a 3.5L direct injected V-6. This will reportedly yield over 25mpg combined in the 4,500lb S-Class.

Mercedes-Benz E320 wins World Green Car award

The Mercedes-Benz E320 Bluetec today was named 2007 World Green Car. The E320 beat out the BMW Hydrogen 7 and the Volkswagen Polo BlueMotion for the honor. The initial entry list had 14 contenders, including the Saab 9-5 BioPower flex-fuel, Fiat Panda, Citroen C2 Stop & Start and Subaru R1e. The Green Car honor was part of the World Car of the Year award ceremonies held at the New York Auto Show in which the the Lexus LS 460 was given the top honor.

To be eligible for the World Green Car award, the vehicle must be all new or substantially revised and be available for sale in at least one major market during the last calendar year. It must also meet or more of the following "green" criteria:
  • Tailpipe emissions equal or better than California SULEV or US EPA Tier 2, Bin 2, or Euro V.
  • Fuel consumption equal or lower than 47.6mpg combined
  • Use of an advanced power plant technology aimed a specifically increasing environmentally responsibility.
For the Green Car honor, the vehicle may be a prototype with a near-future application provided is has been released for press fleet or individual evaluation.

According to the voters made up of journalists from 22 countries, the E320 Bluetec won the award for diesel re-entry into North America and paving the way for super-clean diesel technology.

Geneva Motor Show: pictures of the Mercedes-Benz Vision C 220 BLUETEC concept

We already know a lot about the Vision C 220 BlueTec that Mercedes-Benz brought to the Geneva Motor Show. And, while we also had the two official pictures (click on thumbnails below), for a really good look at the styling and features of this production preview showcar, we can now offer up Autoblog's high-resolution gallery.

The BlueTec system in the Vision C 220 means the car is ready to meet the EURO 6 emission standard, which doesn't kick in in Europe until 2015. With an output of 125 kW (170 hp) and a peak torque of 400 Nm, the Vision C 220 BlueTec consumes just 5.5 liters of diesel per hundred kilometers (about 43 mpg in the U.S.).

Geneva preview: The new Mercedes-Benz clean diesel, the Vision C 220 BlueTec

The new Vision C 220 BlueTec from Mercedes is coming to Geneva with fuel consumption of just 5.5 liters per 100 kilometers and an emissions control system that is ready to meet the Euro 6 standard, which doesn't kick in until 2015. Benz drivers will still feel comfortable with an engine that has a peak output of 125 kW (170 hp) and a peak torque of 400 Nm. Mercedes-Benz is displaying the BlueTec emission-control technology with a consumption-optimized four-cylinder engine for the first time at the 2007 Geneva Motor Show.

Dr Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of DaimlerChrysler AG and Head of the Mercedes Car Group, says that, "The sophisticated four-cylinder diesel engine with BLUETEC emission control is a prime example of leading-edge, future-compatible technology. Our diesel strategy is an effective answer to the question of how to save fuel and, therefore, CO2, to further reduce all exhaust emissions including NOx and yet still ensure effortlessly superior driving enjoyment. In this respect, we believe our state-of-the-art diesel concept is currently the best and most efficient solution available."

We say thanks. The DC press release is after the jump, and we've got two high-resolution photos available.

Detroit Auto Show: Mercedes dances with 4Matic, Vision GL 420 Bluetec concept

From left to right: Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of DaimlerChrysler and Head of Mercedes Car Group is not dancing with the stars Emmit Smith, American Football Legend, and Cheryl Burke, Dancing Star. Click for a high-res version.

Diesels, even clean diesels, can't compare to plug-in hybrids or EVs for newsworthiness (or hype), but a lot of CO2 emissions will be saved from polluting our atmosphere thanks to cleaner diesel engines in the coming decades. While the Volt is stirring passions of green car drivers around the world, Mercedes is at the Detroit Auto Show with two greener cars with a little less of a splash: the new 4MATIC and the Vision GL 420 BlueTec concept.

The 4MATIC is a new S-Class that has the fourth generation Mercedes-Benz four-wheel drive system, which uses less fuel than previous Mercedes engines. At least, I think so. Read this sentence (from the DaimlerChrysler AG press release) and tell me if you agree: "The new 4MATIC combines agility, comfort and enhanced traction with considerably reduced fuel consumption which is roughly (0.1 gallons / 0.4 liters) more than that of a comparable model with rear-wheel drive." So the sentence says "considerable reduced...which is more." I think it means that overall the fuel consumption of the 4MATIC is less than older Mercedes, but not as low as comparable rear-wheel driver cars? Make sense? DC goes on to say that the lighter weight of the 4MATIC helps with the change in fuel consumption.

Moving on.

The big BlueTec news at the NAIAS is the Vision GL 420 BlueTec concept car, which Mercedes says, "demonstrates that BLUETEC(R) makes it possible for large and powerful vehicles in particular to offer good fuel economy and the lowest possible emission levels." The Vision GL 420 has a V8 diesel engine that delivers 216 kW (290 hp) and generates 700 Nm (515 lb-ft) of torque, while burning an expected 9.8 liters per 100 km (24 mpg). This concept uses second-stage BlueTec technology with AdBlue injection that will eliminate more than 80 percent of the NOx emissions, and is compliant with the strict BIN 5 regulations, just like the three new V6 BlueTec models - the R 320 BlueTec, ML 320 BlueTec and the GL 320 BlueTec – Mercedes will bring to the U.S next year.

LA Auto Show: Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Volkswagen and Jeep® Launch BLUETEC Diesel Initiative

DaimlerChrysler and the Volkswagen group have announced their intention to promote the BlueTec brand worldwide as a name for clean, highly efficient diesel engines. Both companies have been long-time proponents of diesel technology. Mercedes-Benz was the first manufacturer to sell production diesel engined cars back in the 1930s and VW and Audi have also been producing diesels for several decades.

According to J.D. Power study, titled "Global Outlook For Diesel" diesels are expected to grow to 15 percent of the North American market by 2015. VW will begin using BlueTec diesels in most of their product line beginning sometime in late 2007. Mercedes is already selling the first phase of BlueTec (without urea injection) now and will expand to the urea version next year. DaimlerChrysler will also be adding BlueTec Diesels to various Jeep models in the next couple of years. The upgraded BlueTec version will be able to meet emissions requirements in all 50 states. The full press release from Mercedes is after the jump.
