See what you missed from the Eden Project's Sexy Green Car Show 2008

Filed under: Hybrid, Lotus, Green Daily, UK

As fun as it would be, we can't be at every green car show on the planet. One of the current events we're sad to be missing is the Eden Project's Sexy Green Car Show in the UK. Thankfully, there are plenty of photos and videos streaming our way to make us feel like we're part of the action.

Over on Smart Planet, Adam Vaughan has posted a series of photos and a video report from the show. He snapped pics of the Morgan LifeCar (above, more available here) and the Lotus Exige 270E Tri-Fuel, among others. His three-minute video covers the Axon, Saab Biohybrid, Lotus Tri-Fuel and Ford Econetic. If Smart Planet's coverage isn't enough for you, check out this BBC video or, if you're lucky enough to be near Cornwall before the month is up, go visit the Sexy Green Car Show for yourself.

Geneva 2008 preview: Morgan LifeCar, finally

Filed under: Hydrogen, Geneva Motor Show, Green Daily, Lightweight

Before even the 2007 Geneva Motor Show, the Morgan Motor company was talking about about the LifeCar, a concept vehicle they would be bringing to the 2008 event. Now that the calendar has brought us closer to Geneva 2008, we can get a better idea of what Morgan's LifeCar will look like on the stand.

The lightweight Morgan LifeCar blends the longstanding Morgan style with zero-emission technology that Morgan said "will allow a sporting driver of the future to demonstrate a concern for the environment." The hydrogen fuel cell-powered LifeCar (with regenerative brakes) is designed to blend the "characteristics of the fuel cell" into the architecture of the vehicle while still looking kind of like an Aero 8. Supposedly, should we be allowed to take this thing for a spin, we could go 200 miles per fill-up.

Morgan Motor Company worked with Oscar Automotive, Cranfield University, QinetiQ, Oxford University and Linde AG on the LifeCar. We'll have more details from Geneva, at the latest. There are images of previous LifeCar renderings after the jump.

Geneva 2008 Preview: Morgan LifeCar fuel cell concept

Filed under: Hydrogen, Geneva Motor Show

Press previews for the 2007 Geneva Motor Show have barely wrapped up and we're already getting the first preview for the 2008 show. Morgan is a company that is not renowned for being on the cutting edge of anything. In fact, they are closer to being in the rocks and sticks domain. Aside from the funky looking Aero 8, most of the cars don't look much different than they did in the 1930s. In 2005 they announced a project called LifeCar (high-res non-final concept pics here) in cooperation with Oscar Automotive, Cranfield University, QinetiQ, Oxford University, and Linde AG.

Morgan has now released a rendering of the final version of the LifeCar concept that they are going to unveil next March in Geneva. The LifeCar is powered by a hydrogen fuel cell and one of the goals of the project is minimize the cost of the fuel cell system and get a range of at least 200 miles. The car still has the classic Morgan proportions and even has more traditional looking headlights than the Aero 8. Overall it looks like a mashup of
a 1930s Morgan and something from Blade Runner. We only have to wait a year to see the real thing.

High-res gallery of classic-looking hydrogen fuel cell Morgan Motors LIFECar

Maybe it's better that we didn't bring you images of the Morgan Motors LIFECar when they were released last month. Now, thanks to our new gallery feature, we can offer you the images of this high-tech, classic hydrogen fuel cell vehicle in all of their high-resolution glory (how's that for a way to say sorry for being a month late?). Click on any image in this post to enter the gallery.

As for the details of the LIFECar, well, we know the pedigree but not the performance specs. The exterior design is based on the Morgan Aero Eight, and the engine under that classic hood – actually, scratch that. The four engines are not under the hood, but instead located at each drive wheel – gets power from a fuel cell made by QinetiQ. How much power for how much hydrogen? Morgan Motors is saying that, "the car's power system will be incredibly efficient, producing significant improvements over current fuel cell prototype vehicles," and that the fuel cell will need to provide only 24 kW of energy, much less than fuel cells in other vehicles. Regenerative braking and ultra-capacitors will also be part of the propulsion system. You can read the rest of the details after the jump.

But why is this a one-seater. If I'm going to be toolin' around in a car like this, I want a friend with me. Wouldn't you?

Click on the thumbnails or the larger image above to see a high-resolution (1,280 pixel wide) image gallery of the LIFECar. The images are downloadable for your personal use. The green car is the Morgan Aero Eight.
