Iowa's doing that cheap E85 thang again

First, some history:
These are just some of the recent ethanol (E85) promotions that companies like GM and groups like the American Lung Association have offered. Tomorrow there's another event, this time at a Kum & Go station in Norwalk, Iowa. For four hours (between 10 am and 2 pm) E85 is on offer for $1.60 a gallon. Full details after the jump.

Say what you will about corn ethanol (and we do, don't worry), the food for fuel debate, and the high cost of gas for most of the country, for at least a few people, filling up the flexfuel car won't hurt quite as much tomorrow as it usually does. Take it for what it's worth.

We don't write about Iowa much unless ethanol is involved. Whether it's an proposed ethanol pipeline or ethanol pump label laws, the Hawkeye State is tied to corn ethanol. This post will be no different. In fact, the news here is unsurprisingly similar to an announcement that seems to cross our wires every month or so: cheap E85 at one particular gas station for a few hours.

The details for tomorrow are that a Prairie Gas station in Newton, Iowa will sell E85 for $1.85 a gallon between 2 and 5 pm on Monday. The sponsors include GM, Kum & Go and other likely suspects (full list after the jump). These kinds of promotions will continue throughout the summer, but we'll only be really impressed if a national cheap ethanol day can be organized, if only because that'd be a twist we haven't seen before.

Gas station in Iowa offers cheap E85 on Columbus Day

October 8th (Monday) is Columbus day and to celebrate it (or as a excuse), Loft's Mini Mart on Highway 9 in Swea City, Iowa, is selling E85 at a discounted price of $1.89 per gallon (but just until 2 pm) - up to 30 gallons.

The event is promoted by the station itself and Iowa Clean Air Choice's Team. In the second quarter of 2007, 800,000 gallons of E85 were sold, 40 percent more than the same period in 2006. 70 stations in Iowa offer E85.
