Jim Press: "With a hybrid you get to eat meat but you get the same benefit as eating vegetables"

We've heard a few interesting metaphors before, but never have we heard the auto industry likened to dinner. Well, until now that is. Jim Press, formerly of Toyota and now of Chrysler, made the odd comparison recently. Press considers high-volume models like pickups to be the "meat and potatoes" of an automakers line-up, with a nice dessert coming courtesy of halo cars like the new Dodge Challenger. No responsible dinner would be without your veggies, which aptly applies to the automakers eco-friendly models too. And hybrids? Hmmm... hybrids make up part of a well-balanced diet too - the best of all worlds, according to Jim. "With a hybrid you get to eat meat but you get the same benefit as eating vegetables," he said.

Slate's Green Challenge: can you manage a 5,000-lb diet?

They say we Americans love a good challenge, so in the face of global warming Slate collaborated with Treehugger to come up with the Slate Green Challenge. The idea is that you take a short quiz which determines your annual carbon footprint and then for the next eight weeks, the nation goes on a carbon diet with the end goal of reducing carbon emissions from individuals by 20 percent. The average for a U.S. citizen is 44,312 lbs.

I signed up immediately after reading the press release. It just takes a few minutes out of your busy day to take the initial quiz. After that, you'll be directed towards week 1's topic: transportation. The page offers some tips on saving gas and suggestions for air travel such as purchasing carbon offsets through companies like TerraPass or Native Energy. Make sure to check it out and keep in mind that the first 500 people to complete the challenge will receive a free Slate/Treehugger Green Challenge t-shirt.

Low car diet: walking is always the best reward

push button for walk signalI've been having fun experimenting with a variety of transportation alternatives in the month since I began my low car diet. I've bussed a lot, taken the light rail known locally as the "Max," even riding transport for free in "Fareless Square." My husband had made plentiful use of the bike and ride option (he sticks his bike on the front rack on the bus before work, then rides home late at night when the schedules are inconvenient or nonexistent). We've done the Flexcar thing, and I've biked a ton.

But the easiest option, by far, is simply to walk. I walk to the grocery store with the boys and fill the bottom of my sturdy jogging stroller with canned goods, milk, wine, veggies, bread, juice, and goodies of all kinds. I walk to the neighborhood coffee shop when I need to get away from the house and jump on their free WiFi. I walk to the high school track in our neighborhood to do intervals and let my four-year-old play in the sand. I walk to the knitting cafe for companionship and a yarn fix.

Biking and bussing may be faster, and the Flexcar? It's super cool. But walking is its own reward and it's just so much easier! No helmets, no car seats, no locks or reservations. Just throw the little one in the stroller (he can even climb in himself!), throw my gear in the cargo hold and away we go. Best of all: it's utterly, completely, in every way, free.
