Washington politician talks the talk, walks the walk

Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Legislation and Policy

Politicians are sometimes accused of talking the eco-talk but not walking the eco-walk. While I'm sure that may be true for some many most, I have found one who appears to fulfill his talking-walking obligation. Steve Bernheim may not have a cushy office on Capitol Hill yet, and I confess that I don't know what his ultimate political ambitions are, but if he does eventually make it to the big time let's hope he brings the same eco-ethos that he claims helped him get elected as a humble city councilor in Edmonds, WA.

You see, Steve is a committed proponent of electric vehicles (and if you check out the price (PDF) of his single-seater Myers Motors NMG car, you'll see how committed) who is actively trying to promote the greener alternative of transporting yourself with electric vehicles. "Ween ourselves from nature's black milk," [sic] is the goal he wants to reach, according to an interview conducted with KOMOTV. While the first step towards that end is the installation of a single public charging plug in downtown Edmonds, it is a step in the right direction.

Video: iMiEV has wind turbine in the grill, solar panel on the roof

iMiev

I think we have a winner for the greenest car at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show. Below the fold is a video all about the Mitsubishi iMiEV Sport concept. It's a plug-in electric car with a cool tear drop shape and a number of cool ways of charging the batteries. The iMiEV's lithium-ion batteries can be charged via a wireless microwave charger in your garage floor which means you don't have to struggle to plug it in.

Not keen on turning your garage in a giant microwave? Don't worry, the iMiEV has solar panels on the roof and micro wind turbines in the front grill. The iMiEV has other strange features like the ability to connect to your computer, in-hub motors and an electric plug that flips open. BTW I think the way you say the car's name is eye My EV, which also gives iMiEV our award for strangest car name at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show.

MIT develops system for wireless electricity, dubbs it WiTricity

As a blogger, we often live on our electronic gadgetry like laptops, cell phones and digital cameras, and I am absolutely certain that many of our readers use the same devices and more in their everyday life. So, I am sure that you will agree with me that you would love to cut all the cords that tether these mobile devices into power outlets. Ever tripped on a laptop cord? I've seen many damaged laptops that hit the deck after the cord was tripped on! Researchers at MIT, using funding from the Army Research Office (Institute for Soldier Nanotechnologies), National Science Foundation and the Department of Energy might have come up with a solution to this problem.

Imagine the possibilities of this system for a moment. The automotive applications are obvious, imagine not needed cell phone adapters and the like in your car. But, imagine for a moment an electric recharging station where all you had to do was drive up into a designated spot, turning on the wireless charging. The researchers are certainly not suggesting wireless electric car charging at this point, but it would certainly be cool if that were possible. I'll take a wait and see attitude with this new technology, as I do with most. But I am extra hopeful that this turns out to be commercially feasible.
