VIDEO: Paris Hilton says hybrids cars are "awesome," she has "the first one"

Filed under: Green Culture, Hybrid, GM, GMC, AutoblogGreen Exclusive

Paparazzi asked celebrity Paris Hilton about going "green" (see video below) and buying her new hybrid Yukon. Mrs. Hilton says "everyone" should buy a hybrid. Why? They are "awesome!" She even brags she has "the first one." What might Mrs. Hilton mean by saying she has the first hybrid, a type of vehicle that's been on sale for many years and is actually quite popular? All the commercials for the GM hybrids say "limited availability." GM only recently began selling the very expensive hybrid SUV, so demand may not be that high. Paris probably meant the first hybrid Tahoe sold from that dealership but it's also very possible Paris Hilton has the first hybrid Yukon IN THE WORLD!

UPDATE: GM tells us that Paris purchased the Yukon Hybrid the same as everyone else and they have no idea what she's talking about, either.

VIDEO: Paris Hilton driving in a Land Rover ... with a shaman

Filed under: Green Culture, Hybrid, GMC, AutoblogGreen Exclusive

Update: While Mrs. Hilton did buy a hybrid, Pop Fiction actually provided her with a Land Rover to pull the pranks.

Ladies and gentleman, Paris Hilton got her hybrid! On a recent episode of E! News, Paris Hilton is seen driving in her new hybrid Yukon a Land Rover with a shaman (also see video below the fold). A wha? It's all a part of a new TV show that premieres Sunday (March 9) on E! called Pop Fiction which pranks the paparazzi with staged events.

TMZ also has a spotting of the SUV but sadly TMZ also reports Mrs. Hilton was spotted in her Bentley a day later. We are glad Mrs. Hilton has decided to wear her seat belts correctly this time but we are disappointed to see she attempted to chew gum a mint, text on her cell phone and drive her hybrid Yukon, all at the same time because, according to the punch line of a large number of blonde jokes, this is simply not possible. Check out the galleries of the GMC Yukon hybrid below.

Dilbert creator Scott Adams hates on the Auto X-Prize, green car drivers

Filed under: MPG, Automotive X-Prize, Lightweight

Scott Adams, the creator of the popular comic strip, Dilbert, is not a fan of green cars. His lack of enthusiasm for green autos probably comes from the fact he thinks global warming is taken out of proportion. Adams also seems to think that engineering a green car might not be possible.

In a post to his blog, Scott pokes fun at the Auto X-Prize, a contest with a prize of $10m for the creator of a 100 MPG car, saying the winning car will be too lightweight, not safe and -- for good measure -- ugly. Then he takes off the gloves and starts making fun of green car drivers. Scott says driving a green car is like driving around in a car that shouts, "I HAVE NEVER HAD SEX AND I NEVER WILL!" Adams knows actor Leonardo DiCaprio drives a hybrid, but he concludes his model girlfriends must make him wear two or three condoms.

Scott's criticisms of green car drivers don't stop at his blog. There are several Dilbert strips that make fun of driving a green car. This Sunday color comic strip, for example, says people that want to buy a fuel-efficient car don't know what the word fungible means. This black and white daily strip says SUV drivers should ram into hybrid cars.

Stars of the movie Jumper caught driving hybrid Lexus

Jumper, the #1 movie last weekend, includes the theft of an AMG-tuned Mercedes-Benz SL (you can watch the trailer after the jump). Samuel L. Jackson's character in the movie asks Hayden Christensen's character if he thought he could get away with it. In real life, though, it seems Hayden may be very considerate of his impact on world.

Christensen has been spotted in a Ferrari 360 Modena, but it turns out the actor might have a little bit of a green streak in him. According to a recent interview with Details, Hayden is planting trees on his farm and last September he was caught driving a hybrid Lexus owned by Rachel Bilson, his Jumper co-star.

Paris Hilton: I just ordered the new Yukon hybrid for my birthday!

Filed under: Green Culture, Hybrid, GM, GMC

It's Paris Hilton's birthday and she plans on getting herself a Yukon Hybrid, E! News reports (check out the video above). Paris turns 27 the 17th of February (Sunday) but she is having 6 parties before her actual birthday. Would you expect anything less from Paris Hilton? Here is exactly what Paris says about her Yukon at her '80s-themed birthday party:

I want the new Yukon hybrid. So, I just ordered it for myself. That was a little birthday gift to myself.

Excellent choice, Paris! The Yukon hybrid, one of GMC's two-mode hybrids, is the first full-sized hybrid to hit the market. I am sure GMC is happy their hybrid will be featured in a gazzillion paparazzi photos.

Leonardo DiCaprio's newest ride? Vectrix, a very cool electric scooter

Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Green Culture, On Two Wheels

Our friends over at Ecorazzi are reporting that, according to sources, Leonardo DiCaprio bought a Vectrix plug-in electric scooter. Ecorazzi loves them up some Leo, writing about when he graced the cover of Vanity Fair's green issue and later produced the very green documentary the 11th Hour (see trailer below the fold). Leo on a Vectrix is really not that surprising if you remember that Ecorazzi caught Leo on a scooter before.

Along with being very green, the design of the Vectrix is almost bike like. From certain angles, you could mistake it for a bullet bike. Hey Leo, when it's released, we recommend also picking up an Enertia, the electric bike that AutoblogGreen took Enertia for a test drive and we really liked it. You should also check out the Tesla Roadster. They are starting to hit the roads and Matt Damon is getting one.

Hybrid Malibu TV commercial featuring Mary J. Blige to debut at the Grammys?

Filed under: Hybrid, Chevrolet, AutoblogGreen Exclusive

Recently, we told you GM shelved a hybrid Malibu TV ad to air in the Superbowl. MediaPost is reporting that GM will "advertise during the show (Grammys), with commercials - including one starring Mary J. Blige - that tout the Chevy Malibu and GM's "Gas Friendly to Gas Free" campaign." Is that Malibu ad for the hybrid version of the car? We will tell you after the Grammys (now with writers!) air February 10th.

This won't be Mary's first advertising gig with GM. Mary was also a part of GM's celebrity-packed show at last year's Detroit Auto Show. Whatever GM has in store for us on Grammy night, it can't be as unflattering as using the Greek character of Sisyphus in their Superbowl Yukon Hybrid ad. Someone please tell GM that Sisyphus' pushing that stone symbolizes unending, pointless punishment.

Tom Cruise first to receive $72,500 carbon-fibre superbike

Filed under: On Two Wheels, Lightweight

Tom Cruise is on the top of list to get Ducati's new $72,500 superbike, the Desmosedici RR, which was released this week. The bike uses lightweight but strong titanium, magnesium and tres green carbon fiber. Specifically, the rear seat support is made from high-temperature resin type carbon fibre, only found in racing bikes. The tail also includes a ceramic carbon fibre composite cover, the same technology used in F1 cars.

Tom has received some criticism in the press recently because of a video circulating the internet. We hope being the first to own one of these limited-production (only 1,500 will be made), 200 MPH bikes will cheer Tom up a little. Enjoy the video below the fold of Tom on a bike and lots of gun play in the movie Mission Impossible 2 directed by John Woo.

Videos: Toyota's self-driving electric car, GM's paint shop goes green

Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Green Culture, MPG, GM, Toyota, Detroit Auto Show

Lori Harfenist, a really funny vlogger, was hired by GM to cover the Detroit Auto Show and she filed a report all about green stuff. You can watch Lori interview a GM's color and pigments designer, NASCAR racer Jeff Gordon, Designer: Project Runway winner Jeffrey Sebelia and Def Jam Founder Russell Simmons in the video above.

Indie singer Kat Parsons took a tour of the Toyota factory while on a trip to Tokyo. In the video below the fold, Kat takes a ride in a "self driving electric car" that tours the Toyota factory and passes by what may be an electric filling station. Seems Toyota has GM beat on the whole self-driving car thing.

The electric car looks like the Toyota E-Com which has a 60-mile range, charges in 2 hours and can go up to 62 miles per hour (electronically limited). According to this web page, E-Coms are currently in trials.

Video: Brangelina and the kids riding bikes

Filed under: Green Culture, On Two Wheels, Green Daily

Super couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie were caught bike riding through their home town of New Orleans recently. Brangelina also had the kids Maddox and Zahara in tow as you can see in the video above. Brad Pitt is working in New Orleans with Make It Right, which seeks through good design and charity to rebuilt New Orleans with green homes.

Bike riding and home design are not the most interesting things in the world but Brad Pitt makes it cool. Just look at that photo: The shades and how in the world does he make the scarf do that while riding a bike? A perfectly design retro-styled cruiser bike I might add. The hat is cool too but he should have worn a helmet.

Celebrity signed BugE is now on eBay

Filed under: EV/Plug-in, On Two Wheels, NEV (Neighborhood Electric Vehicle), EVS23

Not too long ago, we brought you news that there would be a BugE electric vehicle which would be auctioned off on eBay within the next few weeks. Guess what? That time has come. Of course you can see the cool little widget above which allows the auction to be seen here on ABG, but alternatively, you can check out the auction page here.

Here is what their page says about the vehicle:

"The green clean zero emissions BugE, built especially by Harvey Coachworks of Knoxville, MD is an electric vehicle (EV) that draws its power from electricity stored in batteries, instead of from the combustion of liquid fuels. It is a low cost street-legal all electric personal mobility vehicle that functions in a 3 1/2 season environment. It is a super-efficient and stylish ride that costs about one penny per mile to operate, and recharges in about four hours from any home outlet."

This one's a bit different, of course, 'cause it's been signed by a bunch of celebrities and is painted a different color. That color makes it look even more Bug-ee than before, we'd say.

Paris Hilton: "I'm buying a hybrid car right now"

Filed under: Green Culture, Hybrid, Green Daily

While promoting Rich Prosecco, sparkling wine in a can, Newsday reports that celebrity Paris Hilton said she is buying a hybrid, like, right now. Paris also said she changed all her light bulbs to energy-safe light bulbs, and turns off the light and TV when she leaves the house. In the words of Paris herself:

I changed all the light bulbs to energy-safe light bulbs and I'm buying a hybrid car right now. ... Little things that people can do every day to make a huge difference.

Good luck to which ever hybrid car maker she chooses. I am sure Paris won't do anything too embarrassing.

Video: Entourage star Jeremy Piven drives BMW Hydrogen 7

Filed under: Green Culture, Hydrogen, BMW, Green Daily

Priven

TMZ has a video of Entourage star Jeremy Piven getting into a BMW Hydrogen 7. Jeremy said a few words to the paparazzi encouraging the use of hydrogen and they noticed he was parked illegally in the red zone. Here is exactly what Jeremy said when asked to talk about the hydrogen-powered car:

If you get more hydrogen stations and you tell the governor like Schwarzenegger to put more hydrogen stations, we can have cars like this, ultimately. They will probably be ready in like ten years.

Jeremy tried to avoid the paparazzi at first but they did give him an encouraging "you can do it" as he unparked after the impromptu press conference. Below the fold is a video of an almost identical scene, jackals and vultures fighting over a carcass in the wild.

Michael Jackson goes green(ish), takes a Prius limo

Filed under: Green Culture, Hybrid, Toyota

Jacko

TMZ has a short, blurry video of pop star Michael Jackson driving off in a Prius limo. Jacko stepped into the back seat of the regular Prius after shopping at Sharper Image in Beverly Hills Friday. In the last few days, we have written about great firsts like a city fleet that runs biodiesel and a corporation adding hybrids to its trucking fleet. Something tells me this Michael Jackson story has a better chance of getting coverage than those two real stories from the popular media and that's really too bad.

Robert Redford is a hypocrite but still damn cool

Filed under: Green Culture, Hybrid, Porsche

robert, redfordIn an interview with Playboy Magazine, actor and all-around cool guy Robert Redford says he drives a hybrid but - guilty pleasure alert - he enjoys speedy sports cars. Robert admits that's hypocritical but I think we are all still shocked and upset to find out Playboy actually has articles. Here are the quotes.

"I drive hybrid cars. I've had passive solar heating and wind generation in my Utah home since 1975. But I must say, I do like racing fast cars. It's a hypocritical, weak move on my part. But I've always loved speed."

"I love finding a good stretch of road and cutting loose in my Porsche. That's all I want to say about that."

Just kidding about that articles thing. If Hef knows anything, he knows words.
