VW will bring 102 Polo BlueMotions to Geneva - one for each g/km of CO2

Filed under: Diesel, Volkswagen, Geneva Motor Show

In a clever PR touch, Volkswagen will bring 102 of its new Polo BlueMotions to Geneva. That's one vehicle for each gram of CO2 the car emits per kilometer it drives (in testing, at least). We know a little about the car (see here) and the other goodies VW is bringing to the show (like the Passat BlueMotion you can see below), but not much about these: the Caddy Life Edition concept car and the Multivan Panamericana and VW's 'Future of the Car' interactive display. All the company is saying now is, "At present we do not have any further details on these cars, other than what you already know!" Thanks a lot, VW. We're ready to stop waiting now.

VW Passat BlueMotion to debut in Geneva

Filed under: Diesel, Volkswagen, Geneva Motor Show

The Geneva Motor Show is coming up in a little over five weeks and the news about debuts is starting to roll out. One of the new models that will see the light of day in Switzerland is the Volkswagen Passat BlueMotion. VW is using the BlueMotion label to indicate the least-thirsty version of each of their models, such as the Polo BlueMotion. Since Volkswagen doesn't make any hybrids, that means all the BlueMotion models will be diesels. In the case of the Passat, it will emit 103g/km of CO2 and have a fuel consumption rating of 60.3 mpg. In order to achieve those figures, VW will probably be tweaking the aerodynamics, possibly including smaller mirrors, modified fascia with openings closed off and narrower tires. The gearing will probably be optimized and lower rolling resistance tires will be used.

VW to start UK sales of Polo BlueMotion in mid 2007

VW's cleanest, greenest model - the Polo BlueMotion - will be launched in Britain in the middle of this year. The BlueMotion model is a special variant of the mini Polo model that has a range of over 700 miles from a mere 11.9 gallon fuel tank thanks to fuel economy of 60 mpg. The 1.4L three cylinder diesel cranks out only 78 hp but still manages a 0-62 mph run of 12.8 sec. The five seater has been tweaked with goodies like low rolling resistance tires, taller gear rations and smaller rear-view mirrors. The down stream side of the engine is equipped with exhaust gas recirculation, a particulate filter and oxidation catalyst. Most impressively it has lower CO2 emissions than a Toyota Prius at only 102g/km, 2g less than the Japanese hybrid. Thanks to Christian at GermanCarBlog for the tip.
