Madrid announces plans to ban polluting cars from city center

The City Council of Madrid, Spain, has unveiled plans to create a low-emissions zone in the city center which would ban polluting cars. This system is very similar to the ones implemented in several German cities and differs from Milan and London's option of an urban toll (or congestion charge).

If the measure gets the green light, only cars that accomplish the Euro III emission standards or higher would be allowed in the city center from 2010. Note that German cities require Euro IV and Diesel Particulate Filters for diesels. Residents might be exempted from this measure.

According to the City Council, this area will reduce NOx emissions by 47 percent, as well cutting particulate matter (under 10 micrometers) by 37 percent. Madrid's traffic accounts for more than 75 percent of NOx and particulate emissions in the city.

China to ban cars from the Olympics, comply with international standards for car emissions

China will ban about half of its 3.3 million cars from the streets during the Beijing Olympics (August 8-24) in an attempt to cut air pollution. Necessary cars like emergency vehicles, buses and taxis will be allowed but only if they have an even or odd number license plate number that matches the even or oddness of the date. China may also change the emissions standards of cars and gasoline sold in Beijing to comply with international standards. Will all of this lower the air pollution at the Beijing Olympics? Not likely. Recently, China tested the car ban and discovered it actually increased air pollution.

Mexico bans used cars from America - except for 1998 models

It was come to my attention recently that the president of Mexico, Felipe de Jesús Calderón Hinojosa, is an avid AutoblogGreen reader. Just the other day we mentioned that gas-guzzling, pollution-spewing, used American cars were flooding the streets of Mexico, creating the conditions for impending environmental disaster. Well, the good president obviously read the post and quickly made an astute decision. Ban this horde of iron invaders! One bold decision and everybody's happy, no? The environmentalists are happy, the Asociacion Mexicana de Distribuidores de Automotares,AC is happy. Everybody's happy. Well, everybody except for the poor used car dealers. So, in a move of stunning political adeptness the likes of which had not been seen since el revolución, an exception was made. Since 1998 was such an exceptional year in automotive styling, let them continue to send 1998 models - and only those - down. That'd be cool. Now everybody's happy.

Could Norway ban all gasoline powered cars?

With all the talk about CAFE standards and gas taxes these days, many people wonder what a government could do to help bring the sale of gasoline powered cars down. How about a complete ban? Would that work? Sounds a little drastic, but Norway is considering doing just such a thing, and they are attempting to figure out if it's even legal for them to do so. It's important to note the difference that Norway sees between gasoline powered cars and biofuel cars. The source article implies that the cars would have two tanks, one for a biofuel like ethanol and one for gasoline. That's not at all necessary really, unless that is what the government would require. True flexible-fuel vehicles are capable of using any combination of gasoline and ethanol, so there only has to be a single tank. Norway also sells electric cars, with the Norwegian brand Th!nk making some headlines recently.

What do you think? Could Norway set a precedent in the banning of all cars powered exclusively by gasoline? Does it matter?
