Auto Alliance: fuel efficiency takes a back seat to survival
Filed under: AutoblogGreen Exclusive
Bailouts, ever-increasing CAFE standards, dropping sales. It's not an easy time to be in the auto industry these days, but someone's got to speak up for the automakers. That person is Charlie Territo, communications director for the Auto Allliance, who we last spoke with at the New York Auto Show. Territo hosted a conference call today with a few of us blogging types and talked about all of the above topics and a few more. Did you know, for example, that the million fewer cars sold in the last three months compared to last year represents a $26 billion loss for the industry (given that the average new car price is $26,000)? That's what Territo said, anyway. But we paid the most attention to the stuff about more efficient cars and how the OEMs can reach the goals demanded by consumers and the government in a time of financial crisis. Follow us past the jump to read all about it.
