UK car sharing company WhizzGo expands to Camden with new Citroën vehicles

WhizzGo, the UK car sharing service that favors Citroën vehicles, it moving into the its London Borough of Camden with Citroën C8 MPVs and Berlingo Multispace mini-MPVs. This is the first time these larger vehicles are being used by WhizzGo, which previously had C3 superminis and Xsara Picasso compact MPVs in its fleet. The expansion brings WhizzGo's London fleet to about 200 vehicles.

The reason WhizzGo likes Citroën so much: "We have found that Citroën takes its environmental responsibilities very seriously, with low CO2, fuel efficient HDi diesels, which can also be run on up to 30 per cent bio diesel, innovative Stop & Start technology and, in London, professionally converted LPG-fuelled cars," said Charlotte Morton, WhizzGo's managing director in a prepared statement. "Citroën's car range also offers the wide choice of models that our members require – and all have high standard levels of comfort and safety equipment."

The balloons are optional.

"Swipe a Car" is how Charter Drive pitches their car sharing service

Comparing car sharing services around the globe allows us to see all the ways one can operate a part-time car business. One thing I like about Charter Drive, based in Sydney, Australia, is their three-part pricing structure for users who need a car occasionally, frequently or regularly. Occasional users don't pay a monthly fee, just a higher per-rental charge, and get a 30 free kilometers worth of gas (everyone who wants to use Charter Drive needs to pay a $25 sign-up fee). Higher-use members pay a monthly fee, but each rental costs less. If you need a car for more than a few hours at a time, Charter Drive's car rental partner, Red Spot Car Rental, offers discounts to Charter Drive members and offers home pickup and delivery.

As Charter Drive learns from WhizzGo and City Wheels teaches Street Car a thing or two and ZipCar informs the next car sharing program on the horizion how its done, people living in metropolitan areas will really get into these programs. It can be a colossal hassle to have a car in a city, with limited parking and traffic on top of the standard car ownership costs. Compare the hassles with the option of using public transportation and car sharing, and it just seems natural that well-run car sharing services will expand dramatically in the near future.

Now you can WhizzGo in York

WhizzGo, a UK-based car sharing company, is now operating in York. This makes six UK cities (along with Liverpool, Leeds, London, Brighton & Hove and Southampton) cities where drivers can pay to use a car by the hour. It's callled car sharing.

Similar to the U.S.-based Zipcar, people who want to use WhizzGo cars first buy a membership (for £25 plus a refundable insurance deposit of £125) and can then use any available car for £4.95 an hour. The hourly rate includes gas (up to 30 miles a day) as well as comprehensive insurance and roadside assistance. The rates are reduced when renting for a full 24 hours or on weekends. WhizzGo furthers its environmental goals by offering low-emission Citroen vehicles (C3 hatchbacks and Picasso MPVs) and parking the cars near public transportation locations.
