ibuyeco claims carbon offsets of 25,000 tons since June

Filed under: Etc., Carbon Offset, Green Daily

One of many green insurance programs, ibuyeco has been offsetting drivers' CO2 emissions since opening shop in June. The company just sent out an announcement that the results so far include the offsetting of 25,000 tons of carbon dioxide with the help of the CarbonNeutral Company. While this sounds like a lot, it's actually kind of a drop, really. After its first three months of operation, ibuyeco claimed they had offset 18,000 tons. Do the math, that's 18,000 tons in the first three months and then 7,000 in the following two.

Maybe this is why, instead of focusing only on the 25,000 tons number, ibuyeco's press release (after the jump) frames the amount as "the annual CO2 emissions of an entire town." ibuyeco says 25,000 tons of CO2 is "the equivalent to the annual CO2 emissions of 4,464 UK households (based on 5.6 tonnes of CO2 per home). That is roughly the equivalent to the population of Ilfracombe, Devon." Well, there ya go.

Australians can now buy carbon-neutral car insurance

Australian drivers who want to clear their environmental conscience can buy "carbon neutral" car insurance from ibuyeco. When you get your insurance through the company an extra surcharge will be applied to your premium to buy carbon offsets equivalent to the output of the insured car for the term of the policy.

The money will go to eco-friendly projects identified by Greening Australia. The insurance is offered by Australian Insurance Holdings and a similar program has been in place since June in England by BGL Group. BGL says the ibuyeco program has offset 20,000 kg of carbon dioxide emissions since the program launched.

Ibuyeco car insurance offsets 18,000 tons of CO2 in first three months

Ibuyeco is a green car insurance program that launched on World Environment Day (June 5) with a push from supermodel Laura Bailey and, according to the company, has managed to offset 18,000 tonnes of CO2 since that day. By charging a bit more than standard insuarnce, ibuyeco works with The CarbonNeutral Company to, oh, I suppose plant trees and whatnot. How much a person pays depends on the vehicle's engine size, fuel type and how far he or she drives in a year. Considering that there's a little flash animation on the ibuyeco website that says that taking just one car off the road for a year will eliminate a ton of CO2, is it safe to assume that ibuyeco has signed up 18,000 customers?

British supermodel launches eco-friendly car insurance

Filed under: Etc., Green Culture, Jaguar, Carbon Offset

If you follow the automotive and fashion model worlds, one name that you'll find in both arenas is Laura Bailey. A few years back she was the "face" of the Jaguar X. Her latest auto adventure is something a little better for the environment.

To mark today as World Environment Day, Bailey is helping to launch ibuyeco, a green car insurance program in the UK. The concept is to have people pay a little extra on their insurance premiums to offset the carbon they emit while they have the policy. Ibuyeco says their policies are "competitively priced" and the small offset charge is based on what kind of vehicle they drive and how many miles they put on a year. The CarbonNeutral Company is the offset provider.
