Colbert's Wørd discusses the magic of ethanol {Autoblog Green}
May 1st 2008 2:48AM I read the page you linked to, and it reviews about 5 different studies showing an EROEI (Energy returned on energy invested) of 34%-70%. This means you can use the energy from the ethanol, to harvest more ethanol, and you thus need no gasoline (after you have enough ethanol to complete a harvest).
I should note this is all for Corn based ethanol, and there are far better feedstocks for ethanol production, both with greater yields and higher EROEI.
Will your green car give you cancer? {Autoblog Green}
Apr 29th 2008 2:18AM I think it's worth noting the difference between ionizing and non-ionizing radiation. The radiation from normal (i.e. not an X-ray machine) electronics is non-ionizing. I don't think there is a real balance of evidence to show non-ionizing radiation is harmful to living creatures. In any case, the government generally sets out "safe" levels just in case they might be harmful. We aren't talking about high voltage power lines here, hybrids might use 500VAC? Nearly every street with power on it uses 10Kv+ transformed down to mains voltage, and that stuff has to ride in across neighbourhoods from the power station.
Xtreme Motorsports to offer a high performance electric sandcar {Autoblog Green}
Apr 24th 2008 4:08PM I'd say the outstanding performance and range are probably a result of a light car.... Less weight in all that safety crap that cars have. Less weight in doors, air conditioning, roofs, lights etc.
We should build "normal" cars more like this.
Blade Runner: Australia's first zero-emissions car {Autoblog Green}
Mar 29th 2008 2:29PM I would just like to note this is Australia's first *commercial* attempt. There is this one http://www.electric-echo.com/
I imagine that most of the cost is mostly the batteries.
Gorda, CA station charging $5.40/gal for full-serve {Autoblog Green}
Mar 27th 2008 11:35AM $5.30 a gallon is pretty cheap, it's about $8 a gallon here in the UK, and it's at least $6 a gallon back home in Australia.
Mcgyan process makes biodiesel the newfashioned way {Autoblog Green}
Mar 27th 2008 11:31AM Sounds promising for the small/backyard producer, since you can make your own hydrous ethanol, but you have to buy methanol from elsewhere.
Get schooled on building your own electric vehicle {Autoblog Green}
Mar 24th 2008 6:20AM Who the heck has an electric Holden Commodore? ;-)
Belgian researcher: Almost every single car ad in the EU is illegal {Autoblog Green}
Mar 24th 2008 6:18AM 4x4 is the rest of the worlds way of saying "SUV". What the heck is a "Sports Utility Vehicle" anyway? A utility vehicle has a tray, a sports vehicle is high performance... From those combined definitions you end up with a HSV Maloo, not a 4x4.
I guess most "SUV"s are two wheel drive?
Ears are open: Subaru wants your feedback on the all-electric R1e {Autoblog Green}
Mar 23rd 2008 6:43AM I'll take electric and looks like crud over petrol powered and "sleek and sexy" any day. At least there's a greater chance of following generations actually being able to drive around our "ugly electric" cars that way.
Tender Scarlette: an all-electric Jeep lookalike from France {Autoblog Green}
Oct 8th 2007 6:28AM Looks a bit like a mini moke (with a jeep grille) to me.
As far as the top speed, it's probably on par with a moke, or a combi van..... And I think people will eventually have to get used to these speeds, or nuclear energy. The only alternative I see are roads that supply power, like electrified train tracks do.
