Feb 17th 2008 9:51AM Being a retired Instructor for ground service with a major Airline,We would teach proper baggage handling and this is not what we teach. If this baggage handler was caught by us or a supervisor he would most likely be brought up on charges,if he was on probation (a new employee with less then 90 days, He would be fired) We teach to handle baggage as if it was your own. This definitely is not what he was taught. Sorry to see this happen because it ruins the image of all other baggage handlers that take pride in their work. Keep in mind the job is a hard job , outside in all types of weather and working within a time restrait of minimum connection times. But that still is no reason to handle peoples belongings like that.

Jan 17th 2008 10:05AM I worked as a Baggage handler and instructor for a major Airline for 40 years. Yes we had and I say HAD baggage handlers that were thieves, but we would catch them all. we know what flight had something stolen from and we could pin point that crew that worked it plus any one that handled the bag and in no time find the culprit and eventually fire the thief! in all my years the greater percentage of baggage handlers are honest and are making a living like the majority of you. Word to the wise buy good cheap luggage with straps around it to prevent the luggage from breaking open. Luggage takes a beating because space is limiiited on Aircraft and baggage is normally packed into small spaces.Valuables place in your carry ons . Place your Medicines in your carry on. Refrain from placing liquids in your checked luggage and have a copy of your itinerary in your baggage in case your tag comes off.
