NHTSA cites safety concern after crash testing smart fortwo {Autoblog}

Apr 3rd 2008 10:40PM The only bad thing about this result was the door flying open. smart ought to redesign the latch to prevent this. This was not a problem in the first generation smart that I have. Which, BTW, has averaged 60.3 US MPG over 58,000 miles...

I know someone who rear ended a Civic in his 2006 smart while driving 50 MPH...he walked away at the scene and the tridion bodyshell of his car is on display in the Victoria BC smart new car showroom.

I do feel safer in my 5 star Mercedes-Benz B-Class, but the smart is pretty damned decent for a small car.

2CV, holy smokes, there is no LESS safe car in the world. I like them, but you do not want to crash one. The tubes that form the roof arch give it some strength in a rollover.

Dan Neil doesn't think the ForTwo is so Smart {Autoblog Green}

AFVI Show: Video of our quick drive in the Brabus-converted Smart fortwo {Autoblog Green}

Apr 12th 2007 12:34AM This is the Canadian model "Edition nightrun", which has a bog-standard 40 HP diesel engine with lots of Brabus trim. It has wide wheels with skinny tires on them (should have 175s on the front, 195s on the rear). Nice car all the same. Check out www.clubsmartcar.ca/forums for more information on Canadian diesel smart cars.

Canada taking positive steps to encourage fuel-efficient motoring; but 114mpg?? Get serious! {Autoblog Green}

Mar 23rd 2007 11:34PM Mike Magda: 114 imperial MPG in a smart fortwo cdi is not only possible, it has been done and then some.

Keith Hebert (www.100MPG.ca) has recorded as low as 2.23 L/100 km (126 MPG) in his bone stock fortwo cdi, by driving slowly (83 km/h) on flat ground and having the tires inflated to near their maximum pressure rating.

Others have achieved 100 MPG too. 90 Imperial MPG is easily obtained in highway driving, at a steady 90 km/h. To get over 100 MPG, the road speed has to drop to a little over 80 km/h.

In mixed driving, over the 27 months I have owned my smart, I have averaged 74 imperial MPG, without trying at all. Mine even has wider tires and is often driven with the convertible top down.
