Jun 17th 2008 8:01PM I don't get the "pipe dream" comment. I regularly got 56 mpg on the highway and 48mpg combined in my Golf 1.9TDI. How much does a regular Golf get? Oh, yeah.

Bill proposed to raise fuel economy standards 4% a year through 2018 {Autoblog}
Mar 14th 2007 11:54PM far jr., you seem to be having a little trouble expressing yourself. You don't mean consumers will have fewer choices, you must mean that consumers will no longer have certain choices.
Consumers may no longer have the choice to barrel down the road in a 9 mpg ego mobile - or fewer types of them anyway. Taking the Libertarian stand that you should be able to do anything that doesn't effect others, you should not be able to do that because it does effect others.
I just read a blog with an SUV driver boasting about his own selfishness since he didn't have any kids and didn't care what happened to the planet after he died.

Mar 14th 2007 6:31PM Tina (Post #36): I don't know what you're referring to? While there seems to be a lot of talk about the quality of VW, I'll take the fit and finish of my Golf above that of a Ford Explorer any day! - also the quality of the materials and especially the drive quality.
I recently rented a Jeep Patriot... OMG, how can anyone drive such a thing? I was scared on the highway as I bounced around the road (not to mention how fast it sucked gas for such a relatively small thing). I was happy to be back in my smooth riding Golf.
Also, the crash tests of my particular (2002) car seem to come out pretty damn good: http://www.automotive.com/2002/12/volkswagen/golf/safety/index.html
Furthermore, have you seen this? http://www.autoblog.com/2006/11/10/the-5th-gear-smart-crash-video/
Or this:

So I don't understand what you're talking about. I choose safety, quality, comfort AND fuel economy!

Mar 14th 2007 12:02AM Steven T: Which government should build highways for us? The Chinese?
Our government is selling highways off to foreign investors and then leasing them back. A consequence of "privatization" or right-wing economics (I call it profit taking).

Mar 13th 2007 10:37PM It's interesting how in one breath you bemoan the EU for considering a limit on Autobahn speeds and instead suggest better fuel economy. Then, a few hours later, you complain about better fuel economy standards.
My TDI gets 55 mpg. 55! ...and it's also damn clean on B100 biodiesel. MANY [gasoline] cars easily achieve 35 mpg highway today. If more demand was created for economical vehicles instead of for gas guzzling, monster, death mobiles, maybe we'd be getting somewhere. Creating demand: SUV advertising rose from $172.5 million in 1990 to $1.51 billion in 2000 to save a non-innovative, flailing domestic auto industry (more profit on trucks).
Some people would leave the corporations to CONTROL the market unopposed, working only for their own (short-term) interests.
Where did all the propane, natural gas, hybrid and ethanol vehicles in the late nineties / early decade? It was mandated by law: The Energy Policy Act of 1992.

"Free market" is a fairy tale (i.e. NAFTA). The market's either influenced by the powerful or by the government. Same debate re: Network Neutrality. Do you want a few cable companies controlling the Internet or "we the people."

Mar 11th 2007 11:41PM Wow. 50,000USD for a shell around a k12rs and trailer wheels. Not a bad deal for the manufacturer if they can sell any. Decent concept but lame execution.
