What cars can we get today with 35 mpg? {Autoblog Green}

Dec 24th 2007 3:35AM Ian is correct that the 08 method EPA numbers are not used for CAFE. The CAFE numbers are derived from unadjusted old EPA procedure dyno numbers. The EPA window sticker numbers on pre-08 MY vehicles were already adjusted downwards 10% for city and 22% for highway. For 08+ MY vehicles, they've made the tests tougher. One can see some info about the tests at http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/fe_test_schedules.shtml.

The current passenger car standard is "27.5 mpg" and the current "light truck" (includes minivans, vans, pickups, SUVs and some car-like vehicles) is "22.2 mpg".

Per http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/epadata/08data.zip, there are ~57 vehicles (there are some dupes due to variants getting possibly counted multiple times) that have ">= 35 mpg". My Prius counts as getting "65.8 mpg".

Also, yes, UK gallons are larger than US gallons. Per http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&safe=off&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&hs=mci&q=1+british+gallon+in+us+gallons&btnG=Search, 1 UK gallons is ~1.2 US gallons.

How long will it take you to recover the extra money you pay for a hybrid? {Autoblog Green}

Dec 3rd 2007 3:26AM Joseph: Great observation! I didn't realize that. Looking at the Prius vs. 4 cylinder Camry comparison, it looks like they made the same mistake.

Per fueleconomy.gov, the combined 08 method mpg rating for the 08 Prius is 46 mpg vs. 25 for the 08 Camry. If you look up 07 Camry 4 cylinder numbers, the old numbers were 27 combined and 24 under the new method.

GM and Toyota to make a hybrid together? {Autoblog Green}

Dec 1st 2007 6:12PM FrankBank: GM now "leading" w/the Volt? Go and try buying one right now. It's just a bunch of marketing hype and vaporware right now. We'll see when/if it actually sells along the competitive landscape whenever that it is.
