McCain has no plans for Detroit bailout {Autoblog}

Jun 29th 2008 8:48PM AZ Mike,

One thing you left out in your thesis of how Detroit will make a Phoenix like rise over the coming years is that oil prices fell all through the 80's. That saved Chrysler. Although the minivan focused leadership helped the falling price of oil did what Detroit could not, convince people to buy larger higher margin cars like Jeeps, and Trucks. The auto biz is in trouble but unfortunately the domestics are in rougher seas at the moment

Jun 29th 2008 8:35PM I agree that the ripple effects wold be huge. However the Airline bailout was less than 25 billion. A bailout of GM alone would be over 60 billion dollars if the govt were to take on the health care and pension guarantees. This is a bailout that we cannot afford at the time. Unfortunately a GM bankruptcy is imminent and will happen before the end of the year.

Jun 29th 2008 8:29PM If the Detroit automakers were to shutter other companies including a smaller Ford and Gm will come up in their place. There is still a need for assembly line workers and managers and parts suppliers. Although many would be out of work, the marketplace cannot absorb all the cars and trucks that are made and never sold without huge discounts. The UK car industry is more or less surviving making foreign nameplates. US brand car dealers on the other hand are out of luck. Community centers anyone?

GM launching zero-percent financing sale, raises prices by 3.5 percent {Autoblog}

Jun 23rd 2008 2:49PM There is reality and then there is consumer views. The consumer at larger believes that for their dollar import brands are equal or better. This is not the reality necessarily. However it was GM's duty to its stakeholders to convince the consumer otherwise. Imports didn't take sales over 20 years Gm lost sales.

Jun 23rd 2008 2:29PM Unfortunately and I mean that most sincerely (bad for the US) this is just the start of a big giveaway that will be happening as GM moves closer to bankruptcy and eventual taxpayer bailout.
