GM dropping Volt's range from 600 to 360 miles {Engadget}

Jul 10th 2008 3:32AM Dude, they are just fitting it with a smaller fuel tank, it still works the same as normal, but they figured since it was so efficient there wasn't much point having it drag around a big tank.
The specs of the car are unchanged.

GM dropping Volt's range from 600 to 360 miles {Engadget}

Jul 10th 2008 3:27AM This is the most irrelevent article I've ever seen.

The benefit of the volt is how much fuel is uses, not how much fuel it carries!

Who cares how much fuel your car carries? Unless you're planning a solo trip across the Gobi desert you will just fill it up when it gets low.

This article makes it look we were promised a big range, but the technology couldn't deliver, so now we have to settle for a lower range.
In actual fact, the only "story" is that they've decided to fit it with a smaller fuel tank to save space. BIG DEAL!

Wrightspeed SR-71 electric car will do 0-60 in 2.5 seconds {Engadget}

May 29th 2008 4:18AM Mike, I know what you're saying but:
1. The smog is where you can't see it, but that also means you aren't breathing it (good thing).
2. One big power station burning coal for 20,000 cars is more efficient that 20,000 car engines burning the contents of 20,000 fuel tanks.

Cheers big ears,

Designer proposes VEIL Solar Shades to help power schools {Engadget}

May 29th 2008 3:52AM Am I the only one that sees the approximately 5,000,000,000 square mile unused roof space right next to these things?

Tesla Saga continues: When is production car #2 not? {Autoblog Green}

May 14th 2008 9:08AM Martin, you can't help the assholes of this world.
Thanks for starting Tesla, let's all hope it does well and keeps the public eye open to the possibilities of EVs.

Greenpeace: Carbon capture is not going to save our climate {Autoblog Green}

May 8th 2008 9:12AM OK, first things first, Armmat you need to chill out a bit mate, you're going to give yourself an infarction.

Anyway, back to energy, the solution is obvious:
- nuclear for base-load,
- solar and wind to top it up,
- biofuels for ships and aircraft,
- batteries for cars

Nuclear because:
I'd rather be in charge of managing the occasional half swimming-pool of nuclear waste than keeping the lid on millions of tons of a clear odorless gas, and the only two realistic options for massive base-load are either nuclear or "burning stuff".
Plus, nuclear waste doesn't have to be stored forever, only until we get the Star Trek teleporters up and running.

Wind and solar because:
They keep getting cheaper and cheaper, and are more and more reliable the bigger the grid they are hooked up to. Good for security too, very tedious to bomb a windfarm, although one might be able to train kamikaze seagulls.

Biofuels for ships and aircraft because:
Only liquid hydrocarbons have the power/weight ratio to give sufficient range (ie. portability), at least for the foreseeable future.

Batteries for cars because:
If you were looking for a place to outlet exhaust fumes for any other application, I don't think anyone would suggest a million small pipes at knee-level dotted throughout the city.
Hydrogen takes care of the exhaust problem, but it's only around 25% efficient to split it out of water, so batteries have a permanent 4X head start, and they're already almost good enough.

Cheers all!

Are Hypermilers a menace on the road? {Autoblog Green}

May 8th 2008 5:46AM I don't hypermile, but it's just common sense to coast towards a red light.
I sometimes wonder what goes on the brain of someone who actually accelerates towards what is obviously a complete stop.
It might make a good thesis to make a study of these people. "Hello, can you see further than 100m up the road? Do you understand that when you push the accelerator you are spending money?"

London's Congestion Charge will increase CO2 emissions? {Autoblog Green}

Apr 17th 2008 5:36AM An increase might be the immediate impact, but sooner or later people will get sick of the 3 hour drive around the CC zone and just get on the tube.
