Ho, Ho, Huh? High gas prices putting a damper on car sales but not holiday spirit {Autoblog Green}

Dec 18th 2007 1:43PM Here's another example of Republicans not understanding economics, and powerful Republicans understanding economics all to well.
Consumers lose money that otherwise would have been disposable income. Our economy is based 70% on consumer spending, gas prices matter to the number of jobs in this country.
But wealthy corporate oil boys like high gas prices, and don't mind making a buck of the back of overall economic health.

A prudent public investment would make sustainable transportation investments that will only spur long term economic growth. But you have to understand economics to vote for someone who will do that.

Micro-hybrids set to take off in coming years {Autoblog Green}

Dec 18th 2007 12:43PM Interesting thought. I certainly like the scope because it is small, accessible, and affordable. The truly breakthrough products will effectively target the middle 80% of the market.

Here's the problem as I see it. I know an electrical engineer who is converting his Prius to a plug in. He claims the problem with converting a normal car to hybrid is that you need a computer controller to handle the switching and dual motor drive train. Although this one may just switch the engine on and off, however the obvious problem here is starting the engine before you can start the car in stop and go traffic, the annoyance of not being able to move would effectively kill your mental benefits of having this car.

Broke Homeowners sing the DIY blues {DIY Life}

Dec 17th 2007 1:34PM Energy efficiency can be an green option that adds green to your wallet. Simple DIY projects can dramatically decrease your monthly energy bills.You can put a jacket around your furnace, use low-VOC caulk to seal leaky windows, or install better insulation. You can even install radiant heating and run it with solar-heated hot water. Any or all of these options will be relatively inexpensive and will pay back for itself many times over in saved energy bills over its lifetime.

Remodeling? Plan a home theater {DIY Life}

Dec 17th 2007 1:23PM I think its important to remember green when remodeling. When remodeling a basement, you'll have fewer windows and likely a furnace. This means that you'll be putting pollutants into the air and not refreshing the air with outside air. On top of that, the materials you use will likely be emitting toxic substances called Volatile Organic Compounds, VOCs. VOCs are the "new car smell", they are also what you smell when paint is drying and you feel lightheaded if you breath too much of it. These are actually toxic compounds with dramatic health effects. Simple choices like low VOC paints and carpets can decrease the health risks you'd face in a remodel of this kind. Also, most people have cold basements. If you have forced air convection heating, that air will rise and heat the rest of your home while the lower half of you is still freezing while you watch your movie on the big screen TV. A more energy efficient option would be radiant heating along the floor. This type of heating uses hot water circulated among tubes built into the floor, so that instead of trying to indirectly heat the air around you, it radiates that heat directly to you. And since heat rises, placing at the floor means you're heating the bottom and not the top of the room. Couches aren't usually placed at the top of a room.

When remodeling a home, green/healthier choices can make a bigger impact than you ever would have thought.
