Winners and losers in the age of $4+/gallon gasoline {Autoblog Green}
May 19th 2008 10:51AM Losers: People "who bought homes near major employment centers." Because they have to endure the crowds and high crime rates. I grew up in Newark, NJ and there is simply no way I would subject my kids to growing up in that environment. Fine, you can walk to and from work and, if you carry a gun you can thwart the mugger. I'll pay $10 per gallon for gas so my kids won't have to deal with 50% highschool drop out rates and the results hanging out on street corners.
My wife was a grammer school teacher in Birmingham, teaching inner-city kids. She loved those kids and we spent many $ supplying materials that the school and their parents wouldn't. Most of the kids couldn't read at their class level but she got in trouble with the administration when she brought in lower level books they could read. She finally quit when the administration was changing grades she gave to pass on kids who were not capable. Yeah, go live in that environment and save some gas money.

May 16th 2008 10:27AM Thanks Earl. I'll be sure to pass on your kind words to the 300,000 employees at Ford and the 97,500 employees at Chrysler. Sorry, you self-centered slug, your taxes will go up in order to pay the unemployment for the additional 500,000 people who work in related industries.

May 15th 2008 9:09AM armmat, once again you put your ignorance on display. Ford, GM and Chrysler cars have 4 and 5 start ratings too. Get your facts straight.

May 15th 2008 8:45AM TG, Ford is responding to a very militant CAW union, that's all. As far as Kirk K and Jerry York are concerned, they are not interested in a long term investment in a strong company. They see Ford's turn-around starting to show some benefit and they want to cash in. Nothing Kirk or his minion Jerry York have ever done has been to the benefit of the company they are interested in. York is already stirring the pot suggesting Ford sell Mercury. (One wonders how you would split off a division that is basically a "badge engineered" Ford.)
The government wants to know: Why Are You or Aren't You Biking to Work? {Autoblog Green}
May 14th 2008 1:39PM Many cities have laws against riding bikes, skate boards or roller skates on sidewalks. Obviously you feel that your rights are superior to those of pedestrians...somewhat like the actions of "cagers" (car drivers) with respect to you.
I ride a motorcycle to work most days and have to avoid "cagers" in spite of the fact that motor vehicle laws give me the same right to a traffic lane as a car. You just have to accept the fact that most drivers are inattentive (cell phone, swapping CD's, changing radio stations, shouting at the kids etc.). Bikers "ride like you're invisible" because the excuse is often "I didn't see him.".
But Ron, you might want to consider that the pissed pedestrian has the same opinion of you as you have of drivers...except the pedestrian is where he belongs and you are not!

May 9th 2008 3:31PM Doug, cool your sinsabilities. If I was talking about a BMW I'd say Hans was working on it, a Fiat it would, of course, be Tony. Kim may be commonly a Korean surname, but I worked with a guy from Japan whose name was Kim Sukada. Not sure what "Kim" may have been a nickname of some kind.
Rob, you made my point. An enthusiast makes the sacrifice and drives the exotic because he enjoys the drive. A collector covers it with a tarp and waits for the market to pump up the price before he sells. Your $15K sedan is transportation from A to B. Do you "enjoy" the driving experience or is it just a means to get from A to B? Do you wash and wax your car (enthusiast) or take it through a drive-thru car wash (consumer)?
Another day, another award for the Prius, Green Engine of the Year {Autoblog Green}
May 9th 2008 1:04PM Most IC engines will yield between 30% and 35% thermal efficiency when operated around the torque peak. It is idle time and off-torque-peak operation that depresses the efficiency. That 14-15% number is too dependant upon mode of operation to be anything other than a "talking point". An IC engine that is shut down instead of idling and one that could be maintained near torque peak RPM would have to be more efficient than a non-plugin hybrid. Charging a battery via a generator driven by an IC engine and then driving the vehicle through an electric motor simply has to be less efficient. Too many losses through all of the energy conversions must impact overall efficiency.
