Aptera crushing lots of its cars {Autoblog Green}

May 5th 2008 5:11PM Mightn't it be safer with 4 wheels? Our regulatory system is just plain dumb. There's no reason a company can't make a car, do enough testing to convince me I am willing to use it, and sell it to me. Unfortunately the regulatory maze we live under will continue to protect the few companies with money and time enough to navigate it.

Man, this stuff gets old. If we've really got such an environmental crisis, is it absolutely imperative every car has an airbag or whatever? I mean, if anyone really believes we're going to roast in our own juices, you'd think auto safety regulation could go out the window in favor of lighter vehicles.

Tjaarda and HST International now taking orders for all-electric Mustang and Shelby Cobra {Autoblog Green}

Apr 18th 2008 12:25PM If people want to complain about the costs, complain to the regulators-- the Naders and the rest of the safety-over-sanity nuts. Cars are getting heavier and heavier, not by actual need, but by addition of rules upon rules upon rules.

I can buy and drive a Pinto, or better yet a motorcycle, and some guy with too much time on his hands gets to tell me what new car is safe or unsafe for me to drive? Thanks, I can decide for myself.

And we'd be able to choose, we'd have more than a few car companies, we'd have electric options already, if that were the case. The Commuter Car's been running for years.

As DRM fades out, Watermarking fades in {Download Squad}

Jan 15th 2008 12:58AM "Invasion of privacy? Maybe."

How is that? Just curious how a passive identifier in a product voluntarily purchased by a person could conceivably be an invasion of privacy.

I wouldn't mind watermarking at all. I think they've every right to sell what product they like, just as the consumer has every right in the world not to buy it. Not that anyone has the willpower to exercise that right instead of just stealing anymore, but whatever.

Jan 11th 2008 10:54PM It's perfect to get chat even filthier than it already is. Type something way over the edge, delete it, moderate it, add a smiley face and it's all OK.

Wondering if all typing is logged or loggable for the inevitable use by predators to send then retract a message.

How safe is Thailand? {Gadling}

Jan 8th 2008 10:02PM Either:

a) The cop is right
or
b) The couple is right

Neither makes Thailand safe or unsafe. I've never been the victim of a no-knock SWAT raid to the wrong address here in the US, but it has happened. Anecdotes just don't tell us any useful information.

It would be nice to see some statistics, but I can tell you from my experience, maybe 15-20 trips, from the border of Cambodia to the hills in the north, the scariest thing that happened was a pack of feral dogs chasing me while jogging in Jomtien.

Thai people, yes, LIKE ANY PEOPLE, are different when they're drunk. Holy moly. I have been to some of the seediest areas in Bangkok and Chiang Mai, never felt the least but threatened.

However, like anywhere, people should take precautions. Out late at night amongst drunk people, yes, bad things are more likely to happen.

There are tourist police in most any touristy location specifically there to protect the safety of visitors and the viability of the tourist industry.

As an aside, it's a sad story about the Canadians, but no more so than the thousands of other deaths that happened in the last few days. Condolences to their families.

Intel's philosophical impasse - it's deep {Download Squad}

Jan 7th 2008 2:37AM By the way, why do you imply that somehow a more expensive OLPC is more philanthropic than a cheaper Classmate? Is only the blessed Negroponte allowed to provide cheap computing to the third world somehow? Are his intentions so above reproach that they add a premium to the price, that the poorest people in the world should be charged more because Negroponte's some kind of self-styled saint?

You talk about 'undercutting' as though it's a trick. We're talking about ass-poor people here, in what world is a lower price bad for them? Besides, they don't come close to undercutting the giving-away price of the 2-for-1 OLPCs, I didn't see any criticism on that one. Insanity.

Intel's philosophical impasse - it's deep {Download Squad}

Jan 7th 2008 2:31AM I don't really care about the motivation, they're just right.

I think the real question is, how can the OLPC project claim to really want to help children by limiting competition in this critical area? Could be a number of reasons-- they want all the credit, they want all the money, they believe third-worlders are too dumb to make choices, etc. Any which way you slice it, OLPC wants less choice for those on the other side of the 'digital divide' and that's pretty sick.

The OLPC initiated this with the demand that Intel stop trying to sell the Classmate. If anyone's motives need examining, it's them, not Intel.
