Who else thinks the Poulsen hybrid is the sleeper team to win the X Prize? {Autoblog Green}

May 7th 2008 11:00PM I interviewed Ulrik Poulsen and Sandu Pescaru of Alpha Core / Poulsen Hybrid about a month ago at the New York Auto Show. You can listen to the interview at Automotive X Prize Cars.

VIDEO: Fifth Gear reviews electric Smart car, turns it into series hybrid with off-the-shelf generator {Autoblog Green}

Mar 5th 2008 3:14AM iDevin - I did a search after seeing your hint and I think I found the car you are talking about:

http://evnut.com/docs/rav4evpfc50.pdf

If you go to the bottom of the document, they talk about hooking up a Coleman Professional 11000 generator (~11kW) to their (retrofitted) onboard charger, and getting ~27 MPG in charge-neutral mode. Unfortunatly the generator is not quite large enough to travel at highway speeds (they claim about 60 MPH top speed without depleting the battery), but it's still pretty cool!

They also link to a more official version, actually commissioned by Toyota!

http://evnut.com/rav_longranger.htm

It gets an astonishing 38 MPG and is strong enough for sustained operation at any speed. It really makes you angry that Toyota doesn't make RAV4-EVs anymore. I mean, have a few of these trailers around for lease for long trips and it's an awesome vehicle!

Loremo will go all-electric, skipping this year's Geneva Motor Show {Autoblog Green}

Feb 22nd 2008 4:26PM Interestingly, they don't say whether they will use the electric version in the Automotive X Prize. Given the substantial (>2:1) advantage that electricity has in the "miles per gallon equivalent" calculation, they may have developed this electric version especially for the AXP. The Loremo was already a leading competitor, so this just further solidifies them as a team to take seriously.

Dilbert creator Scott Adams hates on the Auto X-Prize, green car drivers {Autoblog Green}

Feb 22nd 2008 4:19PM I personally think those Dilbert comic strips are funny - if you can't laugh at yourself, you're taking life too seriously.

In my view, part of the reason for the Automotive X Prize is to see if Scott Adams is right. Will all of the competitors for the AXP be too lightweight, not safe and ugly? There are some teams already competing for which this isn't true - but there is also no guarantee that those particular teams will even qualify, let alone win. So, the value of the contest - the whole point of doing the thing - is to see what we get. That's what makes it fun and valuable. Bring on the competition!

Air Car coming to America by 2009-2010, will cost $17,800 {Autoblog Green}

Feb 21st 2008 4:39PM Zero Pollution motors also intends to enter the AirCar into the Automotive X Prize:

http://xprizecars.com/2007/12/mdi-inc-and-zero-pollution-mot.php

But as KarenRei says above, I have my doubts that it's actually efficiency enough to meet the "100 miles per gallon equivalent" requirement. It will be interesting to watch at the qualifiers, that's for sure :-)

Air Car will be released this year thanks to $30 million from Tata {Autoblog Green}

Feb 14th 2008 5:01PM A company called "Zero Pollution Motors" is going to bring the AirCar to the US. They are not yet taking orders, but you can sign up to be on a miling list :-)

Also, Zero Pollution Motors plans to take the air car into the Automotive X Prize, which should be interesting.

Hydrostatic drive racecar features regenerative braking {Autoblog Green}

Feb 13th 2008 11:48PM The Valentin Ingo competitor for the Automotive X Prize also plans to use a hydraulic hybrid scheme which sounds similar to those one - and we may actually get to see it race :-)
