Solar moratorium full speed reverse {Autoblog Green}

Jul 5th 2008 11:40PM Guys, don't misinterpret what's going on here: And EIS is a federally mandated component of any proposed energy project of any sort. All these solar projects will have EISs just like any new coal plant or hydro dam would.

The freeze was on accepting new applications for review (applications that included EISs), meaning that they would not even consider granting any construction permits, even for projects that had crossed all their "t"s and dotted all their "i"s, and had sparkling EISs that indicated no negative impacts whatsoever.

These solar projects, which are now once again being considered, will have every bit as much regulatory oversight as any other major infrastructural project.

Maxwell will supply ultracaps for Milan's electric buses {Autoblog Green}

Jul 5th 2008 11:09PM UltraCaps have a higher power density than any battery. For the total amount of energy that is being stored the UltraCaps are the lightest way to go. What they can't do is store lots of energy (unless you believe Eestor) or store it for a very long time.

My question is, if these things have overhead power lines then why do they need to worry about storage at all?

Gas-siphoning HUMMER leads police on high-speed chase {Autoblog Green}

Jul 4th 2008 9:55AM If you wanted to construct a publicity stunt to get people to think twice before buying a Hummer, you really couldn't script it better than this. This has done just a brilliant job of driving home the points that:

Hummers are expensive to operate.
Hummers are neither fast nor nimble.

Gordon Murray's Type-25 city car gets fleshed out {Autoblog Green}

Jul 4th 2008 9:23AM The business model of making up a neat car design and selling it to an OEM sounds great, but from what I understand that's a strong mentality of "Not Invented Here" for any commodity manufacturer when looking at the designs from other designers.

How bad do you need it? Gas for sex deal goes awry in Kentucky {Autoblog Green}

Jul 4th 2008 9:20AM I'm a little surprised that any of those laws apply. It sounds like this was a barter transaction, which to my understanding would make it fall outside the jurisdiction of any regulations for business operation (or prostitution).

Michigan governor proposes reducing speed limit to save gas {Autoblog Green}

Jul 3rd 2008 1:17PM The Governor bikes to work two days a week? That's awesome. I'm very impressed and wish to offer my support.

That almost makes up for driving a 21mpg Tahoe hybrid the other 3 (or 4?).

VIDEO: Top Gear looks at alternative fuels in 1990 {Autoblog Green}

Jul 3rd 2008 1:11PM Wow, good find.

It's a bit depressing that we're still saying "maybe in a few years" when all that was being discussed (on Top Gear no less) 18 years ago.

Toyota recommends driving less to save gas {Autoblog Green}

Jul 3rd 2008 9:33AM I've got another tip for saving some money:

Spend less.

I should get a Nobel....

Two Oregon cities will start the state's electric car charging infrastructure {Autoblog Green}

Jul 2nd 2008 4:40PM One possible business model would be that the local grid operator pays for the outlets, and uses them to supply "regulation down" service, (www.ornl.gov/~webworks/cppr/y2001/rpt/122302.pdf), so you could charge for free while providing a service to the grid.

Two Oregon cities will start the state's electric car charging infrastructure {Autoblog Green}

Jul 2nd 2008 4:36PM There are already tens of thousands of plugs around the country (in RV parks) that can deliver about 12 kW (240V x 50A).

If you use about 250 Wh/mile, that would be charging at a rate of 48 miles of range per hour.
