BREAKING: HUMMER may die, 4 GM plants to close, Volt approved for production {Autoblog Green}

Jun 3rd 2008 3:28PM Here's a Q.. Why not, instead of using an Otto-cycle motor at constant RPM as the 'range extender', use a micro turboshaft engine instead?

http://www.turbinetechnologies.com/PT-50/news.html

Lower EGTs by reclaiming the heat for even more power... Turbines are more fuel-efficient than reciprocating engines, they're lighter, they have fewer moving parts.. This particular engine is being designed to accept all military jet fuels, diesel, gasoline..

Jun 2nd 2008 6:35PM You know what does a pretty good job of storing hydrogen atoms at STP?

Gasoline...

Granted, there's those pesky carbon atoms, but if they could be sucked out of the air and converted back into gasoline as a closed-cycle process...

May 23rd 2008 12:42PM "Eventually electric cars will be the solution. Much cleaner, and lower maintenance than the ICE."

Eventually, we will all be dead.

Eventually, Bussard electric fusion will power equipment to generate gasoline or diesel from water + CO2 from the air, thus closing the carbon cycle and obviating the need to use compressed H2 (since aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons tend to be the best way to store H at STP).

In the meantime, diesel for long-distance driving, hybrid for urban cycle.

May 11th 2008 9:21PM Why not just reformulate it a bit further into gasoline? It's a much better carrier of hydrogen at STP than methane.. Plus, there's a century of development in gasoline-based infrastructure..

Here's hoping such reformulation plants can be powered by Bussard-style electric fusion..

Mar 28th 2008 3:40PM Sure the 8-speed would go great with anything, but diesels really need closer ratios since they rev so slowly.. If you lose 400-500 rpms or more between shifts on a diesel (like I do in my 4-speed Benz) you sit there waiting for the damn needle to climb even at full throttle.. Ideally they should work best with CVTs but AFAIK there is no CVT that can withstand the torque of even a 2l modern diesel.

Mar 28th 2008 3:33PM US$3.51/gal for diesel in Germany?

It's $3.94/gal today.. IN NEW JERSEY!!!

Grrrrrr.....
