More reports that the next Prius won't start off using LiIon batteries {Autoblog Green}
Jun 14th 2007 7:31PM Toyota would always choose reliability over performance, but I'm surprised that their huge team of talented engineers aren't able to find a solution to overheating problems. What a pity, looks like we've got to wait for the 4th generation Prius then..

Psst, Deputy Mayor of London, wanna free BMW Hydrogen 7? {Autoblog Green}
Jun 14th 2007 7:29PM To be honest, the issue lies not with the car but with the hydrogen supply network. The Hydrogen 7 is probably almost production ready. But what's the point of buying a car when its fuel is not easily available?
North Carolina man fined for using vegetable oil in his car {Autoblog Green}
Jun 14th 2007 7:23PM The fines not withstanding, I also read that the motorist is required to post a US$2,500 bond before he can use bio-fuel in his car.
Why are they discouraging people from this eco-friendly alternative? It's similar to the Singapore situation, as mentioned in my blog
There seems to be an ambivalence of governments towards bio-fuels. On one hand they can see its obvious advantages. On the other, they are reluctant to bite the hand of the oil companies that feeds them so much taxes.

BP's only UK hydrogen station demolished {Autoblog Green}
Jun 13th 2007 8:18PM BP had a similar trial here in Singapore. One of my friends was driving an hydrogen powered Mercedes A-class for a few months.
The trial has met the same fate. It ended quietly with no plans to expand the scope. It's a pity but we could all see this coming. Hydrogen just isn't a viable option at the moment, nor for the next 10-15 years.

DIY Solar Scooter = Free Commuting {Autoblog Green}
Jun 13th 2007 8:15PM I checked out the link, he's used it for over 1,100 miles of free motoring in 6 months. And it could be plugged into the grid to generate power when not in use. Cool!

Europe to increase steadily the use of biofuels {Autoblog Green}
Jun 13th 2007 8:10PM I'm from Singapore, and Malaysia just next door is a huge producer of palm oil. This bio-fuel boom in Europe is causing many farmers to switch to growing oil palm instead.
There are growing concerns about the impact of monoculture on the environment, and how over-specialisation could increase their vulnerability to any policy shift in Europe.

Diesel plus hybrid equals 70+mpg {Autoblog Green}
Jun 13th 2007 8:08PM Regarding Peugeot's poor showing in UK satisfaction surveys, a lot of it has to do with the poor customer service by the UK dealers. It's not just about the car itself.
I've been hearing about diesel-hybrids for the past 3 years, good to know it's finally coming!

Poland Springs switches tankers to B5, bottled water still a huge waste {Autoblog Green}
Jun 13th 2007 8:05PM I have no idea why some people drink bottled water at home. If tap water tastes foul, then just use a water filter. Better yet, attach the filter directly to your tap.
I can't imagine spending money on bottled water, and having to lug those heavy cartons home from the supermarket.

Hmmm... I wonder what we could mount this jet engine to... {Autoblog Green}
Jun 13th 2007 7:55PM It is 20 years ahead of its time.
I watched a documentary on it, and apparently one of the reasons for its failure was because it's marketed as a viable personal transportation tool, instead of a toy.
20 years on, this lesson seems just as relevant for the Segway. Call it a toy instead, and it suddenly makes more sense.

TechKnow: Alternative Fuel Cars session report {Autoblog Green}
Jun 13th 2007 7:50PM "doing alternative fuels research strictly from an economic viewpoint."
I think their concerns are valid. I sell green products myself, and the cost is always questioned by my customers.
We can agree that the surge in gas prices has stimulated interest in hybrid cars. Conversely, if cost of gas were to fall dramatically, then I can safely say that most customers would lose interest in eco-friendly fuels.
Having said that, I don't think oil prices are going to fall much from today's levels.
