Jaguar has long been a proponent of aluminum construction for automobiles. In fact, the current-generation XJ uses an aluminum-intensive chassis that's held together by loads of epoxy and over 3,000 rivets, which allows the big Jag's underpinnings to achieve a 40 percent weight savings over a similar chassis fashioned from steel. According to the British automaker, the next XJ will feature a chassis that's just as high-tech and lightweight.

What's the big deal with aluminum and light weight? Not only does the car's performance (acceleration, handling and braking) improve as the weight goes down, so do its fuel efficiency and emissions scores. Further, Jaguar says its innovative structure takes less energy to create and is easily recyclable when the time finally comes to remove the vehicle from the road.

We've been hearing rumors for at least the last few months that Jaguar was working on a new extended-range electric vehicle. Up until now, we had expected the eco-friendly hardware to show up in the British brand's upcoming XJ revision, but a new report from Motor Trend indicates that Ratan Tata, head of the Indian company that owns Jaguar, is putting his weight behind a new two-seat roadster that would likely be known as the XE.

If there's any truth to these rumors, the new XE would use a Chevy Volt-like plug-in capable extended-range electric powertrain consisting of a small three-cylinder gasoline-powered engine driving a generator to keep the onboard batteries topped up. The new XE would supposedly debut at the Geneva Motor Show in 2011 and production would be decided after judging the success of other overtly green vehicles that hit the market ahead of the show. In addition to the EV model, the XE would also feature Jaguar's latest 5.0-liter V8 in both standard and supercharged guises.

Adding an electric motor and battery to a vehicle is just one of many ways to create a hybrid. We've seen hydraulic hybrids being tested in a variety of commercial vehicle applications. Torotrak has an altogether different mechanical system based on flywheels. The Torotrak system first came to our attention a couple of years ago when the FIA proposed allowing kinetic energy recovery systems on Formula One cars. Subsequently, at least two F1 teams licensed the Torotrak system for use, but none are believed to actually be using it right now. The flywheel system has a number of advantages over electric hybrid systems, including cost, weight and size.

It does have limitations as well. The system has to be mounted in physical proximity of the drive hardware because of the mechanical connections needed. Also clearly it cannot be adapted to plug-in capability. However, Torotrak Technology Director Chris Greenwood told ABG at the SAE World Congress that several UK companies are currently testing the flywheel hybrid system in road-going applications in government-funded research programs. A week ago, we heard that Jaguar was going to add a plug-in hybrid powertrain (or extended range electric setup, if that's your name of choice) version to the 2011 XJ. Before that happens, though, Jaguar will be releasing standard powertrain versions of the all-new XJ in July and the company has just released a teaser shot of this car that shows off the panoramic glass roof. This year's XJ will use what Jaguar calls the "ultra-efficient Gen III petrol" engine; a V6 diesel will also be available. The XJ will also be the first Jaguar to use an aluminum body architecture. If you like the look but don't want to wait for the plug, Jaguar will take your order starting July 9 when the vehicle will be unveiled in London; deliveries will start in some markets at the end of 2009. That's also when the full powertrain and price will be announced.

Jaguar is apparently planning to attack the upstart Fisker Karma head on in a couple of years with an extended range electric version of the all-new XJ. The completely reworked XJ is due to arrive in 2010 with a look heavily derived from the smaller XF. A year later, the Indian owned British luxury maker will launch a plug-in version with 30 miles of electric only range that should help the big car get 47 mpg (US) and a CO2 emissions rating of less than 120 g/km.

Jaguar will be able to introduce this new model now that it has approved for a new EU loan for developing greener cars. Jaguar already has an advantage over some of its competitors because the full-size XJ is comparatively light thanks to its aluminum construction. Lotus Engineering and Caparo are helping Jaguar with development of the ER-EV powertrain.

Additionally, Jaguar and Land Rover are also developing micro-hybrids, full parallel hybrids, smaller diesel engines, and boosted gas engines along with even more weight reductions for the full lineup.

Future vehicles from Jaguar Land Rover could use a flywheel-based hybrid powertrain now that the automaker is reportedly working with British transmission specialist Torotrak, the same company that helped develop the KERS hybrid system that's currently being tested in Formula 1 racing. Most hybrid vehicles recapture energy that would normally be lost to braking by using the electric motor(s) as a generator, sending power back to the batteries. In Torotrak's system, the recaptured braking forces are stored in a small flywheel that spins at up to 64,000 RPM. When the vehicle speeds back up, the flywheel gives off its kinetic energy and reduces the load on the car's engine.

In related news, fellow transmission maker Allison has purchased a 10 percent stake in Torotrak and plans to use its Toroidal CVT transmission technology in future vehicle applications. These units are currently used in lawnmowers and can reportedly boost fuel efficiency by 20 percent.

At the beginning of this year, Jaguar revamped its powertrain lineup, including the engines in the still fresh XF and the XK. The new direct injected gas V8 and up-rated diesel V6 provide improved efficiency and more power, especially in the case of the diesel. The 3.0L is now available in two flavors, 237 hp and 271 hp for the XF S. The crew at What Car? in the UK have had a chance to try out the XF S and, unsurprisingly, were impressed. The compression ignition XF is rated at 35 mpg (U.S.) with CO2 of just 179 g/km; very impressive for a luxury sports sedan like the XF. The new engines have better low end responsiveness than their predecessors as well as being quieter. Hopefully the success of the new diesels from German competitors will cause Jaguar to see fit to let us have a crack at the new models. We're not holding our breath though.

Last September, we mentioned an event that is scheduled to take place in Copenhagen, Denmark this August called the CO2 E - Race. At the time, we weren't too sure what the race would involve, but many questions have since been answered. For instance, the course has been designed to look like the letters CO, and the O will be circled twice - clever - when viewed from space (or Google Maps, if that's easier for you). We also know that only vehicles with zero carbon emissions are allowed to participate, and at least one such machine has been entered that's based on a production Jaguar XF sedan.

Danish physicist and CEO of Cleantech Motors Jesper Boie Rasmussen is leading the Project Green Light team, which has created an eco-friendly vehicle from the formerly diesel-powered Jag using lithium ion batteries for energy storage and an electric motor for propulsion. To commemorate the upcoming race, the Jaguar will make a preliminary run through Copenhagen on the same CO path that the race will use, after which the GPS coordinates of the event will be used to create a serigraph print that will be sold at auction. Where can an automaker make a difference? Just by building greener cars? By having green dealerships? Wait, it can also have green training facilities! That's the tack that Jaguar Land Rover, not known for fuel efficient vehicles, is taking. Jaguar Land Rover's new training facilities in Warwick, England occupy over 4,000 m2, including a workshop for all hands-on training. There are also 16 classrooms, which are large enough to house a vehicle for better training. The green part comes from the building itself, which has been refurbished to include an array of energy efficient solutions. For instance, a special wax polymer that absorbs heat in summer and prevents heat from escaping in winter to save on the heating/cooling bill. There is also an array of additional measures such as rainwater harvesting tanks, solar/thermal heating and water heating, high efficiency lighting and spray foam insulation. All this to save an estimated 275 tons of CO2 per year (about 2 million km on the Land Rover Freelander 2 TD4_e).

Jaguar has just announced a new version of its XF sports sedan with a an updated 3.0L diesel V6 that putts out 275 hp and has a massive 443 lb-ft of torque. The new engine replaces the older 2.7L diesel V6 that Jaguar has used for several years. The XF Diesel S gets a combined fuel economy rating of 35 mpg (US), an improvement of 12 percent over the older, less powerful engine. The carbon dioxide emissions also drop by 10 percent to 179 g/km. The torque is sufficient to move the XF from 0-60 mph in just 5.9 seconds. That makes this new diesel quicker than the 4.2L gasoline V8 XF and substantially more efficient. The V8 gas-powered XF is rated at just 21 mpg (US). That's a 67 percent improvement in fuel efficiency and better performance; not too bad.

A slightly weaker 240 hp version of the 3.0L is also available, although it gets the same 35 mpg rating as the more powerful version. Both engines are equipped with dual turbochargers and meet Euro V emissions standards. A 29,000 psi common rail system with piezo injectors handles the fuel delivery while particulate filters deal with soot reduction. The combination of combustion chamber design, fuel system and EGR mean the engines meet European NOx limits without additional after treatment systems.

Diesel is no longer taboo for sportscars. Audi and BMW already have diesel sport coupés and, although it's rumored that Jaguar is working with hybrid powertains, the truth is that they already sell diesel cars such as the XF. The upcoming XK has been spotted in the wild, and it has a new 3.0-liter turbodiesel that's being developed to replace the 2.7 V6. The current offering, at 204hp and 320lb-ft, can't compete with the BMW 635d. The new powertrain also comes with reduced CO2 emissions; 20g/km cleaner, to be precise. The newJaguar XK is expected to arrive in March 2009, with prices starting at £55,000.

There is no doubt that Jaguar is hard at work designing various hybrid systems for its upcoming products. In fact, the recently-sold automaker is receiving some assistance from the UK government to fund the research into dual gas and electric powertrains, as is sister company Land Rover. Recent rumors indicate that the automaker is considering going hybrid for its next XJ sedan. Now, new spy shots indicate that the automaker is currently testing a hybrid drivetrain in its sportier XK coupe as well, as photographers near Germany's famed Nürburgring circuit claim that very little noise is coming from the Jags as they circle the track at high speed. Normally, when racing around a circuit such as this, an abundance of engine roar can be heard for miles, so the lack of sound leads us to believe that there's something different about this car. Could it be a parallel hybrid? Of course, we don't know... but feel free to speculate away in the comments as you see fit.

Hypermiling is too strong a phrase when you apply the MPG-increasing practice to a Jaguar XK-R. Extra-miling might pass muster, but all it amounts to in this particular instance is driving a $104,000, 420 horsepower Jaguar convertible like it's a $22,000 Camry.

Why not go for big dollops of both performance and luxury when you're trying to rock every possible mile out of a tank of fuel? With that in mind, we lined up a Jaguar XKR convertible filled to the hilt with everything but the
$8,000 brake upgrade. When it arrived, the last thing on our minds was what kind of mileage it gets. Dressed in a metallic red called "Radiance" which complemented the tan leather interior and matching cloth top, it looked like the ride home from the office was going to be a good one. Rumor has it that the classic XJ saloon may be the first model to benefit from the government-sponsored testing which should endow Jaguar with the technical know-how to make its first hybrid model. According to the spy shooters from Next Autos, the next edition of the iconic leaping cat has been spotted testing and will reportedly sport distinctive new sheetmetal that should serve to differentiate the newer models from the old. Despite the fact that the latest Jags have been built on new lightweight aluminum-intensive structures, they have been met with less than stellar sales, a fact that many attribute to stale styling that looks just like Jags from... oh, thirty years ago. For this reason, expect a pretty radical departure for the next-gen, which could share styling features with Aston Martin - not a bad place to get some inspiration from if you ask us. Along with the rumored hybrid should be gas-powered V6 and V8 engines as well as the Euro-requisite diesels.

I recently had the opportunity to spend some time with the new Jaguar XF, but here in the US we only get to select from among two powertrains, both 4.2L V8s, one with and the other without a supercharger. Over in the home country, XF buyers can also select from a pair of V6 engines running on either gasoline or diesel. The diesel is a twin turbo 2.7L that was originally developed with Peugeot and is built at the Ford diesel factory in Dagenham England. Popular Mechanics had the chance to spend some time with diesel XF and came away impressed in spite of the writer hating the new Jaguar's grille. The diesel V6 puts out 207 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque which is more than enough for the 3,900 lb sedan. With a 0-60 time of a respectable 7.7 seconds it gets a combined EU rating of 31.3 mpg (US). During the test PM driver managed 29.4 mpg (US) which compares very favorably with the 18 mpg I saw with normally aspirated V8 model. Will Jag bring the diesel XF to the US? At this point no one knows. With Tata Motors now holding the purse strings, anything is possible. If the new diesels from Mercedes, and BMW prove popular, its certainly possible.

For many motorists, V8 means the quintessential type of engine. Power and a beautiful roar from under the hood are its typical signatures, but it's also a synonym for high fuel consumption and a general sense of being dirty. Nevertheless, there are a certain number of V8 engines, and not only diesels, which spot decent fuel consumption and German site Auto-News has gathered them. Coming from a German source, it doesn't spot any small-block Chevy but besides Teutonics, there are three members from the Toyota family and a Briton. Curious? Cleangreencars.co.uk has awarded BMW as the "cleanest premium manufacturer" in Great Britain. Their report found that total model range CO2 emissions from January 2008 to June 2008 at BMW averaged 161.64g/km. BMW's competitors all achieved worse figures. For instance Audi and Mercedes were 177.36g/km and 192.85g/km respectively. Lexus, with its hybrid-based model line-up, managed an average of 194.85g/km, while Jaguar topped 200g/km and Porsche recorded 275.64g/km. BMW's MINI brand had an average of 139.64g/km.

According to BMW's press release (which you can find after the jump), both the EfficientDynamics and the MINImalism program have reduced emissions while keeping up driving dynamics. BMW also said that it's preparing NOx storage capability within a catalytic converter on certain models in the near future and that it was finalizing drivetrain configurations to meet the likely EU6 legislation due to come into effect in 2014.

Now that Jaguar and Land Rover are no longer part of the Ford family, they can't rely on the engineers in Dearborn to provide them with technology they need to reduce fuel consumption and emissions. The new owners from Tata also don't have that expertise in house. With CO2 emissions limits coming to Europe, Jaguar and Land Rover are in the process of hiring 600 people, many of whom will be engineers with the knowledge required to develop hybrid and electric drive systems as well as other new powertrain technology. The Land Rover LR2/Freelander will get a start-stop system this fall and a production version of the LRX concept is expected to debut in the next couple of years. Jaguar so far hasn't implemented any of these types of systems in its cars, although European models do offer diesel engines.

Lotus Engineering is continuing to move aggressively into the realm of greener transportation. This week two different consortia of which Lotus is a part were awarded development contracts by the UK Government Technology Strategy Board. The first of the two projects is the Zero Emission London Taxi that we reported on last month. The government money will be used to help with the commercialization of fleets of fuel cell powered taxis in London by 2012.

The other project, dubbed Limo-Green, involves developing a hybrid drive Jaguar sedan. The description of this car is fairly vague, mentioning an advanced drive motor, small battery pack and an auxiliary power unit for sustained cruising. It sounds like it might be an extended range electric vehicle but with a relatively small battery for only minimal EV-only range. Lotus is developing the APU as a small engine with high thermal efficiency and power output. This could be an interesting project to watch. The Lotus press release is after the jump.
