Hyundai only launched retail sales of its first hybrid a couple of weeks ago, but the South Korean automaker has already received 1,000 orders in its home market. Hyundai's hybrid system has been installed in the Avante (which is sold elsewhere as the Elantra). The Avante is the first retail hybrid available with an engine running on liquefied petroleum gas.

The Avante uses a 15 kW electric motor mounted between the engine and transmission along with an integrated starter-generator to provide stop-start functionality. Hyundai has no plans to sell this or the Kia Forte hybrid outside of Korea in their current forms. However, Hyundai will launch a hybrid version of the new Sonata with a 30 kW motor later in 2010 in North America. The redesigned Sonata will debut in November at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The Sonata will use a lithium polymer battery, the first such application in a hybrid.

[Source: Canadian Driver]
Hyundai gets 1,000 retail orders for its Avante LPI hybrid in South Korea originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Mon, 06 Jul 2009 11:01:00 EST.
Hyundai is piling on additional incentives to boost its Assurance program as the industry heads into the dog days of summer. The newest promotion, Gas Lock, fixes the price of regular unleaded at $1.49 per gallon for the next year. The program runs July 1 through August 31, and eligible vehicles include the Accent, Sonata, Tiburon, Elantra, Elantra Touring, Entourage, Azera, Santa Fe, Tucson and Veracruz. Customers choosing to utilize Gas Lock will forgo $1,000 in available rebates, making the incentive a gamble that gas prices will remain high.

Hyundai Assurance struck at cord with the American public when it offered payment protection in the event of job loss. Now Hyundai is looking to give consumers increased peace of mind over of the volatility of gas prices, which have swung from under $2 a gallon a few months ago to nearly $3 at the beginning of summer.

John Krafcik, CEO and president of Hyundai Motor America, says the company's research shows that "nearly 40% of potential new car buyers are staying out of the market specifically due to uncertainty around future gas prices."

You may remember that last year, Chrysler tried a similar promotion, offering the opportunity to lock in gas at $2.99 per gallon when a gallon of petrol was at an all-time high of about $4.50. The move didn't appear to be very successful for the Pentastar, as most opted to instead take the upfront cash on the hood. Hit the jump to pour over the particulars of Hyundai's Gas Lock promotion, watch the two commercials, and let us know in the comments section if you feel customers would be better off taking the $1,000 or one year of $1.49 gasoline.

[Source: Hyundai | Image: Justin Sullivan/Getty]
Continue reading New Hyundai Assurance provision locks gas at $1.49/gal for one year [w/VIDEO]

New Hyundai Assurance provision locks gas at $1.49/gal for one year [w/VIDEO] originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Tue, 30 Jun 2009 13:20:00 EST.
Hyundai's Montgomery, AL factory added production of four-cylinder engines last year, but recently the engine line has been getting some upgrades. Evidently, Hyundai is getting ready to add direct injection to its 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine. Like other DI engines, the revised version gets increased power along with lower fuel consumption. The DI four cylinder will debut in the refreshed 2010 Santa Fe this fall. Next year, when the completely redesigned Sonata goes into production, it will also get the DI engine.

Power from the DI four cylinder gets bumped from 176 to 200 hp, and it will likely get around 5-10 percent better gas mileage. The all-new Sonata will be unveiled at the LA Auto Show in November. Next year, a hybrid model will join the lineup, as well.

[Source: Montgomery Advertiser]
Hyundai to launch direct injection for 2010 Santa Fe, Sonata originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Fri, 19 Jun 2009 09:23:00 EST.
Hyundai Avante LPI Hybrid - Click for high-res image gallery

Hyundai's Avante LPI Hybrid has been a long time coming. First discussed back in 2007, the company is finally ready to take pre-orders for the LPG-electric hybrid in Korea. According to the Korea Herald, interested buyers can raise their hand for an Avante LPI Hybrid as of today, but the exact price that they'll be paying won't be announced until the sometime before the vehicles July 8 launch date. Like it's Kia sibling, the Forte Hybrid, the Avante LPI Hybrid can burn liquefied petroleum gas (propane). The Avante uses a 1.6 liter engine alongside the lithium polymer batteries and features regenerative braking, stop/start and the ability to travel solely on electric power. Hyundai says that the hybrid gets fuel economy of 42 mpg (U.S.), and that this is equivalent 52 mpg (U.S.) in a gasoline-powered vehicle. Solid.

[Source: Korea Herald]
Hyundai starts accepting orders for Avante LPI Hybrid in Korea originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Tue, 16 Jun 2009 19:01:00 EST. While the stated intent of each of these schemes is to increase new car sales and remove older, dirtier and less fuel efficient vehicles from the road, some powerful organizations have voiced concerns that untold numbers of classic machinery may be lost forever for no good reason. Could it be that both sides are right? New car buyers in the UK are reportedly flocking to Hyundai dealers in droves with a bevy of older vehicles in tow. According to Tony Whitehorn, Hyundai UK's managing director:

For many [the scrappage scheme] is an opportunity to buy their first ever new car, and is enormously exciting. Some people look a little embarrassed when they turn up at a showroom with an old car which is literally falling to pieces but we're happy to take anything as long as it meets the government's criteria. Other buyers have taken the decision to wave goodbye to cars which have been in the family for a generation, but their sadness soon disappears when they get into their new Hyundai.

So, just what kinds of cars are being traded in? The Korean automaker reports that both a Jaguar XJ-S and XJ6 have both been scrapped, as have 34 BMWs, 22 Audis and 32 vehicles from Mercedes-Benz. Six Mazda MX-5's, seven MGFs, a 1966 Austin 1100 and a 1968 Morris Minor were also sent to the great scrapheap in the sky along with at least one Citroen that lost a wheel on the way to the dealership.

[Source: The Green Car Website | Photo: Matt and Kim Rudge]
Hyundai reports 4,000 scrap car trades in UK, reveals some surprises originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Wed, 27 May 2009 15:04:00 EST. Six months into the program, Hyundai Motor America is now paying out the first award grants totaling over $100,000. Three grants of $35,000 each are going to programs in Peru, Mozambique, and Kenya. The Peruvian project is meant to battle deforestation in the Alto Mayo Protected Forest while new trees are being planted in Mozambique to rehabilitate forests that have already been damaged. The Kenyan project will employ over 100 people re-planting trees in a threatened rain forest.

Hyundai is working with CarbonFund.org to identify and fund worthy projects. The program will continue through the 2009 model year and is expected to offset over 93,000 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide. The press release is after the jump.

[Source: Hyundai]
Continue reading Hyundai Genesis sales pay for forest preservation and restoration projects

Hyundai Genesis sales pay for forest preservation and restoration projects originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Fri, 01 May 2009 14:54:00 EST. In reality, the government is only chipping in half that amount, and the automakers themselves are expected to throw in the other thousand pounds.

There were a number of dissenting opinions coming from the car companies that weren't sure about the merits of matching the government's £1,000 figure, but Autocar is reporting that Ford, BMW, Citroen, Hyundai, Nissan, Renault, Toyota and Volvo have all announced their plans to take part in the program. We'd be surprised if the majority of the remaining car manufacturers didn't join in too.

Despite the fact that these automakers are officially offering their half of the scrapping incentive, individual dealerships will still be able to set their own final price for any specific car.

[Source: Autocar | Image: Matt Cardy/Getty]
Automakers line up for UK scrapping scheme originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Fri, 24 Apr 2009 07:58:00 EST.
Hyundai Avante LPI Hybrid - Click above for a high-res image gallery

Hyundai brought two hybrid vehicles to the Shanghai Motor Show this week. The first one is based on the popular Santa Fe crossover utility vehicle platform, and it adds a 30kW electric motor to the 2.4L four cylinder engine. The dual power sources send their power through a 6-speed automatic transmission, and the Korean automaker believes the setup can increase fuel economy and reduce emissions by 50-60 percent, which would be quite impressive if true.

Hyundai believes it could see similar 50-60 percent improvements from its second hybrid in Shanghai, in this case based on the Avante (that's the Elantra to much of the world) compact sedan platform. Both the Santa Fe and Avante hybrids feature a full parallel system, which features regenerative braking, stop/start and the ability to travel solely on electric power.

Like the Forte Hybrid from corporate cousin Kia, Hyundai's Avante Hybrid runs on liquefied petroleum gas (propane), which also leads us to believe that Hyundai is likely using the same lithium polymer battery packs from LG Chem.

[Source: Autoblog Chinese]
Shanghai 2009: Hyundai shows off two hybrids originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 23 Apr 2009 10:12:00 EST. European coupés offer comfort, sporty sensations and, usually, a paying a high price at the pump. But there's good news: the European market offers models that are low on carbon emissions and have decent fuel economy while still offering the refinement typically found on models with larger engines. Unfortunately, most of the models can't be found stateside but there's always hope that some might reach American shores.
Hyundai Nuvis concept - Click above for high-res image gallery

The first hint of what we can expect from the next generation Tucson and Santa Fe crossovers was revealed today at the New York Auto Show as the Hyundai Nuvis concept. The sweeping creases echo and expand upon Hyundai's design direction that could be seen on the Genesis coupe and sedan and the Korean market Equus that stood on display nearby. Like so many other concepts at the show this year, this one featured doors that will almost certainly not be duplicated in production, extra-long gull-wings in this case.

The interior is designed for exactly four occupants instead of going for the maximum possible seating with three rows. Nuvis designers have dispensed with all the usual switch gear in favor of a river of information flowing throughout the concept's interior, all of which is accessible through touch-sensitive surfaces. All of the interior fabrics are also made from 100% recycled materials.

Under the skin, the Nuvis is spec'd out with the same Hyundai-developed BlueHybrid drivetrain that was shown at the LA Auto Show last November. The hybrid system uses lithium polymer batteries, which give designers more flexibility in packaging compared to more typical lithium ion batteries. The production version of this hybrid system debuts next year in the next-generation Sonata, while the design elements of this concept will likely appear on the new Tucson later this year.

Gallery: New York: Hyundai Nuvis Concept

Gallery: Hyundai Nuvis Concept

Photos Copyright (C)2009 Sam Abuelsamid / Weblogs, Inc.
Continue reading New York 2009: Hyundai Nuvis concept hints at next-gen CUVs

New York 2009: Hyundai Nuvis concept hints at next-gen CUVs originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Sat, 11 Apr 2009 19:41:00 EST. However, that is starting to change as people seek to address climate change and rising fuel prices. One example is fleets that are migrating to smaller, more efficient vehicles. Two examples are the University of Southern Queensland and Aurora Energy, both of which have recently purchased new Hyundai i30 CRDis. The cars, sold in the U.S. as the Elantra Touring, are powered by a 114 hp 1.6-liter diesel engine that gets 50 mpg (U.S.) combined. The 2.0-liter gas engine is only rated at 32.6 mpg in Australia (26 mpg according to the EPA here in the U.S.). So far, only a handful of the i30s have been put into those fleets, but drivers are reportedly pleased with the performance and more are likely to follow.

[Source: The Auto Channel]
Australian fleets adopting Hyundai i30 diesels originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Wed, 08 Apr 2009 16:22:00 EST.
Click above for high-res gallery of the Hyundai BLUE-WILL concept

Hyundai reportedly plans to put a plug-in hybrid into production for the U.S. by late 2012 that will be based on the oddly-styled BLUE-WILL concept that's currently being shown off at the Seoul Motor Show. We're not sure if features like the rooftop solar panels and headlamp bezels made from recycled drink bottles will make it to the sales floor, but the concept's plug-in parallel hybrid drivetrain sounds like a lock.

The BLUE-WILL is said to be capable of traveling about 38 miles on battery power before a 1.6L gasoline direct-injected powerplant kicks in to keep the party going. Hyundai says it expects the hybrid to earn a rating of 106 miles per gallon when running in EV mode and an overall rating of 55 mpg when the gas engine is in operation.

Though the Korean automaker isn't ready to talk price, Yang Woong-chul, Hyundai's president of R&D, says, "We want to show our technological image to get people to the dealerships to drive our cars. We are not necessarily trying to make money on hybrids." Based on Hyundai's recent success in entering new markets and taking on new competitors, Toyota, GM and Honda may have good reason to be worried.

Gallery: Hyundai BLUE-WILL hybrid concept

[Source: AutoWeek]
Hyundai to offer plug-in hybrid in U.S. for 2012 originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 02 Apr 2009 13:25:00 EST.
In case you're curious who the intended first customer for Hyundai's new i10 conversion is, just look at the license plate in the image above. Hyundai doesn't name the Pope directly in their press release (read it after the jump), just says that this car is for "a German customer who currently resides in Italy." Wonder who that could be? The Korean company promises that other world and religious leaders will enjoy the new i10 model's 119g/km of CO2 from its 1.2-litre Kappa engine. And, for sure, the i10 is cheaper than most limousines, so leaders of all stripes can save money while they use less fuel. The interior remains faithful for someone used to living large in the Vatican: the upholstery is made from a tapestry woven by monks in the Indian city of Utta Bullacs and the roof features armor called Armour Protected Roof Integrated Lining that is made from fully organic material.

[Source: Hyundai]
Continue reading Hyundai goes for popemobile market with new i10

Hyundai goes for popemobile market with new i10 originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Wed, 01 Apr 2009 15:09:00 EST. The plant, which is a joint venture between Chrysler, Mitsubishi and Hyundai, produces four cylinder engines used by all three automakers. The award recognizes the building techniques used in originally setting up the factory before it started operations in 2005 as well as the ongoing efforts to reduce energy consumption, keep the surround area as much like it was as possible, and not sending any materials to land fills.

[Source: Chryser]
Dundee Michigan engine plant gets Clean Corporate Citizen award originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 19 Mar 2009 16:27:00 EST.
One of the many reasons cited for the continued success of the Toyota Prius is its unique styling, which is both aerodynamically-sound and makes the car instantly recognizable as a hybrid. Other automakers have taken the route of adding special badges or modified grilles to their fuel-saving automobiles to help differentiate them from their standard siblings, but sales of these slightly modified hybrids have not taken off like the Prius. While the car's unique shape isn't the only reason the Prius is the best-selling hybrid, it certainly doesn't seem to hurt.

Hyundai is expected to release its first hybrid model in late 2010. The car will be based on the Sonata midsize sedan, but may sport a distinct look to separate it from its non-hybridized sibling. Further, according to Woong-chul Yang, president of R&D for Hyundai-Kia Motors, the Korean automaker "may change the name if the exterior is quite different. People who drive a hybrid like to be differentiated." You don't say.

[Source: Automotive News - sub. req'd]
Hyundai's first hybrid will sport a "distinctive look" originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Mon, 09 Mar 2009 19:23:00 EST. Fiat bosses must be smiling, because the same has been found for this model year. Fiat's cars produce an average of 137.3 g/km. This places Fiat ahead of all these guys

Peugeot (138.1 g/km)

Citroën (142.4 g/km)

Fiat Group is also in the pole position for automotive groups (138.4 g/km), ahead of PSA, Renault, Toyota and Hyundai. Fiat's figure is also very close to the EU average of 130 g/km that becomes mandatory in 2015. Regular readers already know how it works. Basically, in most instances, the engine shuts down instead of idling, for instance at traffic lights, and stores enough energy to start right back up when the driver presses the gas pedal or shifts into the first gear. This technology can now be found in most car types, and is especially popular in Europe. It will surely become even more widespread once new CO2 legislation is enforced across Europe. We've got a list of 19 models (most of them available now, the rest coming soon) that offer Stop and Start on the continent.

[Source: Auto News]
Continue reading Which cars in Europe have Stop & Start technology?
Hyundai doesn't miss a detail in their lengthy announcement of the new ix-onic concept compact SUV that the company is bringing to Geneva. At first glance, figuring out how to pronounce the name was unclear - is it icks-onic? Eye-x-onic? - but then eight letters and a dash come to the rescue: "ik-sonnik."

With a body that comes in at 173 inches long, 73 inches wide and 65 inches tall, the ix-onic isn't that much bigger than C-segment hatchbacks like the VW Golf. Still, Hyundai says the ix-onic has "an imposing stance and road presence." What's might be more impressive to the green-minded is that the ix-onic features stop-start ( known as ISG, or Idle Stop & Go, in Hyundai's language) and has the first installation of Hyundai's new 1.6-litre GDi turbo four-cylinder petrol engine that emits 149 g/km of CO2. We'll see more when we get to Geneva in a few weeks.

Gallery: HYUNDAI ix-onic Concept

[Source: Hyundai]
Continue reading Geneva Preview: Hyundai ix-onic concept SUV

Geneva Preview: Hyundai ix-onic concept SUV originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 19 Feb 2009 10:25:00 EST.
