Extreme Motorsports introduces second all-electric sandcar, and it's street legal
All of six weeks ago, Extreme Motorsports (aka Xtreme) unveiled their first all-electric sandcar, the Dune Racer. The company thinks we're ready for more, since it announced this week that the second version - the Sportster - will also be street legal. The Sportster uses lithium-ion batteries from AEVehicles and motors and controllers from Azure Dynamics. The Sportster is available now and, although less powerful than the Dune Racer, it will still go more than 100 miles on a charge and charge up for $3 (according to Xtreme's numbers). That low recharge price will need to be used a lot to make up for the initial price of the electric sand car. The Dune Racer EV costs a modest $115,000 (yes, more than a Tesla Roadster) while the Sportster should be around half as much. Considering that Xtreme also sells a $225,000 gas-powered sand car, the 2008 Sandmaster Sandcar, that offers 800 HP. Yowsers. Xtreme is also working on a street legal package for the electric Dune Racer, in case you're into that. Check out a video from Xtreme after the break.

Pretty cool, but I don't think they are actually street legal.

No, they're not street legal now, but if you read the summary, you'd see that they are working on a street legal package of the electric Dune Racer.

The Electric Sportster retails for $50,000 + it's $3,500 for the street legal package. The Electric Dune Racer retails for $115,000. Just a clarification. Yes, the Dune Racer is more than a Tesla however the Dune Racer can eb taken off road at speed exceeding 100 MPH over bumps the size of Tesla cars. Jumps easily exceed 20' high and over 60' long. Can't do that with a Tesla either. They both have their benefits but in December, the Dune Racer will be a street legal off-road electric racecar!

sweet! $53,500, not bad for an all electric bad ass mobile! How long can you blast through the sand at 100mph before needing a recharge, I wonder.

Nice, but if you do any kind of camping in the dunes, then there is no way to recharge.

The car can be charged off a standard RV generator for approx. $8 to 12 dollars in fuel. About 2 to 2.5 gallons of fuel depending on your generator brand.
It's pretty hard to stay at a constant 100 MPH in the changing offroad terrain but at average use it ranges from 1 to 4 hours, depending on your driving style.

first thing you have to know is Alan builds the biggest pieces of junk in the dunes. xtreme is the SELF PROCLAIMED greatest sandcar builder. His customers will tell you differently.
