Ebay find of the day: RAV4 EV

As ABG readers know, car makers large and small are considering electric cars once again. With gasoline hovering around $4 a gallon, greenhouse gas emissions soon to be regulated and national security jeopardized by petroleum, the need for electric cars has never been so obvious. But if you want a full-function, highway-capable 100+ mile range EV now, the options are few and far between. And pricey. The choice today is order a Tesla and wait a year, or wait for a used RAV4 EV to hit the market. It doesn't happen often, but now a Toyota-built, all-electric RAV4 EV is for sale on eBay, here.
One of fewer than 400 RAV4 EVs in private hands, this one is in San Francisco. It has under 50,000 miles on the batteries. While automakers today look to lithium batteries to power their next-generation electric cars, the NiMH batteries in these ZEV mandate era vehicles are proving to be strong, stable, and long-lasting, exceeding Toyota's expectations. A number of these cars have driven over 100,000 miles on the original batteries, and they still deliver a 100-mile range. You might be tempted to ask why we don't have NiMH cars on the market while lighter, longer range lithium is developed. To remain sane, let's just say the car makers learned the lesson of the laptop. We all regret the heavy NiMH laptops of the 90s, with their short battery life and long recharge time.

If you want to know why we don't have NiMH EVs do a search on Cobasys. They own the patents on NiMH batteries, and they settled a patent infringement suit with Matsushita and Toyota.

I want it, but I don't want to pay that much for it. There are plenty of people who will though.
Since this was posted yesterday, the bidding has gone from $23,100 to $27,100, and still hasn't met the reserve.
How high will it be by the end of the auction, on Sunday? Could go as high as $40,000, I'll bet.
Clearly, there is no market at all for electrics.

I have not been keeping proper records, but I believe the last half dozen Rav4-EVs on Ebay all sold for OVER $40k. The price of gas has gone up $0.50/gal since the last one came up. I would be surprised if this one sold for less than $45k.

My bet is that this auction won't meet reserve. After watching many EV auctions, I get the idea many EV sellers on eBay have unrealistic reserves - but use the auction to get publicity for their car, and make contacts that eventually lead to a serious buyer.

I saw one of these barreling down the interstate a few months ago here in Florida. They had a medium sized generator sitting on a platform attached to the receiver hitch with a big electrical cord running from the generator to the car plug. It was a homemade hybrid! Hilarious.

SHHHHH! Thanks for letting the cat out of the bag.
So why won't Toyota make these anymore? They fetch $40K on eBay, get 100mi/charge, and it's a 5 passenger small SUV. If they could sell them at $25K I'd buy one tomorrow. White is fine, thanks very much.

Bidding on this 7 year old vehicle with 47,000 miles on it is now over $55,000. The reserve has been met, with bells on.
Automakers? Still telling us there is no market for EVs?

We will be selling our Berkeley, California based RAV4EV on Ebay starting July 7, 2008. We are the original owners and have only put 43,300 miles on it. We've seen no diminution in battery power. We are only selling because we are moving to the East Coast. The whole family will bawl when the winning bidder drives it away. It is a fantastic automobile.
