Poor country in need of cash? Sell forests to trade off pollution.
Filed under: Carbon Offset, Green Daily, South/Latin America

Bolivia is one of Latin America poorest countries and is looking for a way of improving its economy. Instead of dirty mining or cutting wood, a report written by Andrea Urioste states that Bolivia could sell oxygen. While this may sound like they'd need buyers who are also interested in oceanfront property in Kansas, what we're talking about here is selling the "protection and conservation" of its natural forests.
According to Ms. Urioste, Bolivia could be paid money to preserve forest environments. She proposes a scheme in which rich countries would pay money in exchange for the right to emit more carbon. It's like TerraPass for nations.
In a recent report by the World Bank, keeping 1 ha (2.47 acres) as forest rather than razing it could be worth something between $1,500 and $10,000. If you think it isn't such an important figure, bear in mind that the same report said that 1 ha of soy allows income of about $1,500, while 1 ha dedicated to cattle pays $500 pack and 1 ha of coca, from $250 to $400. I guess trees are the answer.

"exchange the right to emit more carbon". This alone is the reason why carbon credits are worthless and so are those that believe in them! You don't change anything. With "carbon offset" you are doing nothing more than justifying your pollution. How about just polluting less instead of justifying it? This is like buying your pennance. It changes nothing. All this does is to give money to someone else. It's bribery. This is basically threatening the rest of the world by saying if you don't pay me, I'm cutting my forests down. What a crock.
Rather than pay someone else money for false peace of mind, I'd rather just throw that money in my gas tank. At least it's doing something useful to me that way.
I understand the benefits of polluting less and becoming more efficient but financially justifying it rather than reducing it isn't beneficial to anyone. No you aren't reducing it with bs "offsets". You are justifying it and nothing more. Give me a break.

The new "Green" movement is really just the old "Red" one with a new paint job. It is specifically designed to scare people so they will freely transfer their money and political power into the hands of the global socialist elite who own the military-industrial complex (which includes the mainstream media) which has bought and paid for the prostitute politicians McCain, Obama and Clinton II.
The weak minded progressives/liberals/democratic-socialists/neo-conservatives are eating it up like other people's tax money.
P.T. Barnum was wrong. There is MORE than one sucker born every minute.

Monetizing forests this way is a risky game because it sets you up for extortion down the road.
There is no need to actively sequester carbon from the atmosphere just yet, we just need to reduce our dependence on *fossil* fuels. That means aggressive conservation plus shifting to renewable electricity and sustainable biofuels (food to fuel doesn't qualify).
Many oil, gas and coal companies won't like the sound of that, but ultimately it's is the only ticket out of Dodge.
IFF we discover that we need to actively reduce atmospheric GHG levels, we'll figure out how to grow algae, dry them, pack them in non-biodegradable containers and deposit them on the ocean floor. But there's no need for that yet.

It's just sooooooo wrong. It does nothing to stop people cutting CO2. The agreement will come to an end at some point and we're back where we were with just more CO2 (I think the same of any offsetting scheme). Wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong. Will someone please slap anyone involved in this scam.
