The Onion asks about biofuels negative effect on the environment

Whether it's the University of Minnesota losing biofuel research funding or the UK government asking for more information before moving forward, the critical report in Science has had quite an impact on the public's thinking about ethanol and biodiesel. Even if the distinction between cellulosic or algae biofuels and biofuel made from things like corn are not totally understood by everyone, a bad rap is settling in. The fake news reporters over at The Onion have found three people to give their opinion on what it all means. One's off to the right, the others are available in yesterday's American Voices section. The Onion needs to ask "What will $4.00/gal. gas do to the US economy and what would happen if that goes to $6.00 or even $10.00/gal.? We won't be able to afford Food much less ANYTHING else that is transported.

That said, the whole food to fuel concept (especially E85) was a poorly conceived boondoggle to get a few midwest farmers and investors rich (and allow US auto to pretend to reduce fuel consumption for a few years). The truth has caught up to them and hopefully it won't bring the more promising biofuel prospects down with them (i.e. algae, cellulosic).

Valcent Products, the company, is doing great things using algae, which for the most part does not negitivly effect the environment what so ever. Both their products reuse the water up to 95 percent and they are showing the world how we can make biodiesel and grow food where you never could before. Check yourself. http://www.valcent.net

Lets take a look at he tiny state of Hawaii. In the last 8 DAYS, on the island of Moloka'i; there is a population of about 8000, 120 people lost their jobs because 1 ranch shut down due to the cost of fuel. Also, with in the last 8 DAYS, our state lost a major airline carrier, partially to the inter-island fare wars, and...yep! The cost of fuel. 1900 people are out of work from that employer alone! So, to kind of put things into perspective....you just can't do it! You've got the cost of fuel as the determining factor in the lives of more than 2000 people in the youngest of the United States! Here we pay for EVERYTHING with fuel "surcharges" added. From milk costing well over $7/gallon to gas thats 18 cents away from $4/gallon! Bread costs $3.00/loaf on SALE! And that's not even for the really "healthy" bread! So, try putting those things together with a minimum wage of $7.25/hr, heck! You could even make your minimum wage $12.00/hr, you still would be trying to figure out where you next meal is coming from!
