John Travolta flies a hybrid Boeing jet?

Last night during the Oscar telecast, host Jon Stewart joked to the audience, "Whoever owns the Boeing 707 parked on La Brea Avenue, your landing lights are on." As actor/aviator John Travolta ran onstage and bolted through an exit, Stewart comforted the glitterati, telling them, "Don't worry, it's a hybrid."
Now, while John Travolta is a pilot and really does own a Boeing 707 (finished in classic Quantas livery, as seen here, parked at his home in a private "fly-in" community), the company does not make hybrid jets. Boeing is, however, exploring electric engine starts and, more recently, biofuel-powered jets with Virgin Atlantic. You can watch a video with Branson talking about the Virgin biofuel jet below the fold. For the second year in a row, NRDC also worked with Oscar to reduce the show's ecological footprint with energy coming from wind farms and biodiesel. The Independent Spirit Awards, however, drank Oscar's milk shake by using an even greener power source: Ed Begley Jr.

John's hybrid jet airliner is powered by jet fuel and hypocrisy. John thinks he can continue to fly willy-nilly around the world because it is part of his job, whatever that is, while he expects the rest of us to walk or stay home. I have stayed home from all of his movies, so I am doing my part to curb Hollywood style global warming.

I cant believe you guys are taking this as anything more than a quick one liner from Stewart. Travolta is indeed a licensed pilot on several planes including a 747. Its good to see airliners working on better forms of fuel, but its going to be a slow process due to the thermodynamics of a jet engine.

Travolta holds a commercial license (ATP), to fly single and multi-engine aircraft. He is instrument rated and is type-certified to fly Gulfstream and Boeing multi-engine jet aircraft as well as others. At last count he owned 5 aircraft. armmat, you may not like him or his extravagent lifestyle but he is a capable pilot and you're just jealous.

Actually Whopper, Travolta is only a private pilot. Also to help you out, a commercial license and an ATP are two different things, not the same. He is type rated on several airplanes, but is limited to second-in-command on the 707 and VFR only on the Citation. Yes he is a pilot, but he misrepresents himself on many levels. A private pilot does not deserve to be wearing 4 stripes on his sleeve as he crawls out of a 707 when he is not even allowed to be in command. He is somewhat of a joke.
