150 Target stores will get Segway patrols
Filed under: Transportation Alternatives, On Two Wheels, Green Daily
What's good for the police is apparently good for Target Security Patrols as well. Whenever we hear about police departments moving some officers to the two-wheeled, battery-powered Segway PTs (like this), they often mention a certain list of advantages: added height, ease of operation and emissions-free travel. The press release put out by Target, which announces the company's acquisition of Segways to be used as patrol vehicles at 150 stores, mentions the same three features. You'd almost think Segway has a hand in this sort of PR.Anyway, the purchase makes Target one of the largest buyers of Segways. The vehicles will be used in parking lots and "surrounding environments" by Targets across the country. The chain even developed a special Segway PT training program for Target security personnel (step one should be "don't be like the president"). Remember when we were told that these devices were going to change the world?

Target Purchases a Fleet of Segway(R) PTs for Security Patrols at More Than 150 Stores
MINNEAPOLIS, Feb. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Segway Inc. today announced that Target has purchased a fleet of Segway(R) Personal Transporters (PTs) making Target one of Segway's largest customers. The units will be used for security patrols at more than 150 Target and SuperTarget stores throughout the U.S. Minneapolis-based B2B Segway, a Segway Authorized Dealer specializing in commercial applications, secured the Target contract and executed the deployment of the units to the Target stores.

Tripp Welborne, director of operations, Assets Protection, Target, said, "The Segway PT is an innovative addition to our multi-layered mobile security strategy that employs technology to ensure the safeness of our guests and team members."
"We are honored to have Target as our customer," said Jim Norrod, CEO of Segway Inc. "Target has achieved success by focusing on great guest service and this purchase of a large Segway PT fleet is an extension of that."
Target Assets Protection team members will use the Segway PTs to patrol the parking lots and surrounding environments of Target stores in markets such as Chicago, Miami, Dallas, Los Angeles and Seattle. In preparation for the launch of the program, Target developed a comprehensive Segway PT training program that security personnel completed before the units were deployed at their stores.
Worldwide more than 600 police and security organizations use Segway PTs to patrol urban business centers, airports, university and corporate campuses, parks and shopping malls. The Segway PT has several operating characteristics that make it ideally suited to these tasks:
- Officers stand eight inches taller on a Segway PT making it easier for them to see and be seen over crowds and parked cars.
- Segway PTs are self-balancing even when standing still, and can turn in place. This enables officers to easily move among parked cars and shoppers.
- The units are battery powered, use no gasoline and give off no emissions during operation. Thus, they can be used both indoors and out.
B2B Segway is a Gold Level Segway dealer focused on supporting enterprise level clients nationwide. B2B Segway works closely with corporate and governmental customers to integrate sensible product solutions, brand personality and workhorse functionality. B2B Segway's commitment is to provide legendary sales, service and support that enable a successful integration of Segway PT capabilities.

This means fewer guards covering a larger patrol area more frequently with a better viewing height, stronger presence and less fatigue for less shoplifting and safer patrons.
What's not to love?

I don't care for some Dufuss fat-*ssed rent-a-cop roaming around their "territory" with the pleasing nature of a rabid junkyard dog.
Listen, you may like a fascist state...
The 45 CCTV cameras mounted on every other lamp pole hasn't made this world pure enough for you?
But if you really need to nanny-ify our world, it seems the real cops on mountain bikes keep Vancouver pretty clean and no batteries to worry about. Cops are fit, too. Burn stored fat, not stored coal.

Just lame as hell. Get them bikes.
Waste of money and energy. And it's not like security guards can't use the exercise anyway.

Considering that walking is the only form of exercise that many Americans get I see this as a bad thing.
We really need to start tying the cost of health insurance to risk associated with lifestyle choices in order for individuals to have incentive to lower health care costs and this is the opposite of that.

As with other posters, I don't get it either. are the rent-a-cops so decrepit they can't walk their beat? the segway doesn't give you much sight distance over walking. also whats wrong with having them try out the Huffy's that target caries?
Segway is another product that is a waste of space time and money and probably CO2.

What the hell? Dudes, I just found out about this much cooler way. If you go to Google and search for images of "ambulation" you'll find out all there is to know about this amazing new method of transportation.
Oh, yeah, I forgot, Target parking lots are sooooooo big. :|

After thinking about it a little, It would be hilarious to see one of these rent-a-cops on a segway chasing down a "perp" in a car. Just to get tripped up by all the speed bumps in the parking lots. I'd give an Andrew Jackson to see that on youtube. that would make Bush's segway experience look graceful.

I'm a college student have worked for four months as a private duty security guard on bike patrol around a large campus of buildings, because it was "a job" and I needed the cash... and let me tell you something right now: biking for 6-8 hours per day on a 9 hour shift (and surprise 4-8 hour overtime periods), for 5-6 days per week is NOT FUN, even when you get paid overtime and have OK benefits. It is NOT easy. So until you have had to walk around a building 12 times in a day, or bike around for 8 hours straight, or done something so physically repetitive, high-impact, tiring, and exhaustive for 45+ hours per week, DO NOT say &@#$% about people who do that for a living. If a security guard (lovingly referred to as a rent-a-cop by previous commenters) get to use a Segway, then they probably should, because they are likely dealing with a whole lot of flak, especially for their measly $10-12/hour. Police get paid probably more than they're worth, and they ARE pigs, so they probably don't deserve awesome Segways, but still I can't imagine any person besides Lance Armstrong working 40-60 hours per week patrolling on a bike, and THEN having the energy and physical ability to chase after a suspect and apprehend them.

As a FORMER target team lead. I have to say this is a total waste of money. In fact eliminating ETL-AP positions to buy these toys is increadibly stupid. Try spending more money on paying team members better than 6.50 an hour and less on gimmicks like walkies that tell you the bathrooms need cleaning or a printer is out of paper. Come on people, quit spending money on crap and get back to the basics of SERVICE and integrity.
