GM's Bob Lutz: Global warming is a "total crock of sh*t"
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Hybrid, GM, Toyota

According to D Magazine, at a private lunch, GM chairman Maximum Bob Lutz said global warming is a "total crock of shit." Bob adds "I'm a skeptic, not a denier. Having said that, my opinion doesn't matter." Speaking about the battery-driven Volt, Lutz said, "I'm motivated more by the desire to replace imported oil than by the CO2 [argument]." At the lunch Bob also said hybrids like the Prius make "make no economic sense" and the Volt is exciting for him because "it's the last thing anybody expected from GM." Don't hold back Bob, tell us what you really think.
UPDATE: Lutz doesn't back down.

I'll say this much for Bob. At least he is half way there. Probably why the Volt has to burn gas to keep up with the EV1.

"18. So what did they call it when the last ice age ended and it got really warm?"
The Holocene interglacial period. And your point is? In the past 650,000 years, there has never been anything close to what we're seeing happening now in a matter of decades.
"common sense like natural sun cycles is simply heresy."
Science doesn't work on "common sense". Science works on study with the scientific method, confidence intervals, etc. Once again, please read the IPCC summary of all of the peer reviewed literature, or at least skim over it. Had you done so, you would have found WG1, section 2, "Changes in Atmospheric Constituents and Radiative Forcing", a 106 page summary of the state of the research in this field, with 18 *pages* of references in it:
http://ipcc-wg1.ucar.edu/wg1/Report/AR4WG1_Print_Ch02.pdf
Solar variability is section 2.7.1. You would have learned how the data is measured (by many different means, including several satellites), how it's modelled, how it is determined from the historical record, and so forth. Every model comes out with a fraction of a watt per meter squared change from the 17th century Maunder Minimum. The papers also rule out indirect effects of solar variability.

I really appreciate your contribution to this blog as of late. I respect your approach and insight.

Your post is confusing:
"Liberals and other zealots only respond to logic by placing some label on the one with the opposing view."
I thought I'd point out that "liberal" and "zealot" are *labels* for views that you seem to be opposing. Kind of a paradoxical dilemma in your own statement, hence the confusion.
Both liberalism and conservatism are rooted in fanatic dogma at the extremes. That's why arguing from either end is absurd.
If you associate religious zeal with ultra conservatism, then I'm only reiterating your post.
If you associate zeal with liberalism only, then you're arguing from one end which is absurd.

It's me with my numerous posts that have started this crazy frenzy race to put for sale a car that i will want to buy. I didn't do it because of global warming and bob lutz realized it. By asking
since more then 2008 years ago to split the water molecule in two i had started a race that must finnish when i will sign a check for a car that
make it's own hydrogen from an onboard water electrolyser, that's all i want for now.
GM like other car compagnies should adopt the bible
and cease collaboration with 'natural ressources'
provider. Water is a natural ressource and is in quantity and on the surface of the earth. Petrol
is worn-out biology and must be transform in plastic of rubber for my future car.

Lutz doesn't understand climate science or running a company (biggest loss in automotive history posted this week). He's irrelevant and he's taking the US auto industry down with him. Good luck with the Volt Vaporware hype-mobile.
And I have to congratulate Meme for the best posts. Make that guy an editor of this blog!

This time will be remembered as the "Age of the DumbAss". Millions of people just like him are simply TOO LAZY to read Free articles on Science at sites like Scientific American http://www.sciam.com/
They'd rather listen to some dumb ass like Rush Limbaugh who is Paid to Spew the Uninformed Republican Bull.
Maybe it's time to get GM Shareholders to ask Bob to "Spend more time with the family". With his "ideas" he's going to drive that company into the Ground. While other manufacturer's eat his market share.
Yes, and thanks meme for your informed comment.

I'm w/ Lutz in that I care much more about burning the least amount of fuel rather than how many g/km of CO2 my vehicle emits.
I suspect MPG is a higher priority for most U.S. consumers than CO2 emissions.
I'm looking forward to PHEVs, regardless which automaker brings them to market.

We need to start stressing "meme"'s last point:
Solar Variability is ALREADY IN THE MODEL(s).
There are No Model's of Climate Change that FORGOT ABOUT THE SUN.

Global warming is indeed real, but it is yet far from proven that global warming is:
1) caused by man, or
2) undesirable.
Mars is warming too. Did you know that? Seems to point to solar activity to me.
All this said, pollution is harmful on other fronts (cancer, ect.) and should be addressed and improved. Oil is bad for many reasons, not just the environment, and it's use should be reduced and replaced.
Bob Lutz is probably reacting to the giant green lie that is aparent to many. It's hard to take arguments seriously when they are riddled with therory presented as fact.
The Earth is balanced (by God) and will correct. You need have no fear of that -- it will correct.

2. Time to boycott new car sales especially GM. Kick 'em while their down.
"For the fourth quarter, GM posted a loss of $722 million, or $1.28 per share, "

Wise says:
That would be pretty dumb considering that GM is leading the way in a fight that seems important to you. I still believe that there is more than one reason to cut oil -- but I'm guessing that in your opinion, only one of the reasons, environment, counts, and anyone who does not reach the same end conclusion as you, is an infadel of your religion, environmentalism.

15. And people wonder why GM's not more into EVs and hybrids than they are :)
Wise:
No, GM has made the most progress of any. I wonder why others are doing nothing. I see action galore from GM. Why not ask Toyota when they plan to discontinue the new line of gargantuan vehicles that they are producing? If not for Bob Lutz, the Volt would not get built. Furthermore -- Toyota is only following suit to build a plug hybrid and no real plans of a Volt counterpart, but thanks to Lutz, they will have to.
By the way, Lutz, last time I checked, is a scientist (an engineer and one of the best to have ever lived.) Why do average people get off on calling brilliant people dumb?

36, They predicted an ice age and it got hotter. They predicted drowning storms and it got dryer. Now they predict warming and we have record cold.
So, you want me to believe their prediction? I'll tell you what I believe based on this prediction. 10 years from now, water will be pouring over the top of hoover dam -- that's how much faith I put in "their" predictions.
That said, I'd still like us to pollute less and use less oil, but for a reason that I at least know to be factual.

Tim 19- Yes, the earth has been warming since the ice age, any idiot knows that. However, the earth is warming FASTER than it would NATURALLY and thus liberals, scientists and educated can agree that HUMANS are the cause for the increased rate of warming. When topics are disussed they need labels to refer to, kind of like titles. You are against book and movie titles as well I see?
