First impressions of the new Subaru Legacy diesel is in, the verdict is ...
What Car? has a first driving impression of Subaru's new diesel-powered Legacy. It's the first compression ignition engine from the quirky Japanese brand. It's not a particularly detailed review and doesn't provide much hard data. However, according to the magazine the new engine which is available in the Legacy wagon and Outback is a gem. They like the smooth running boxer which provides respectable performance to go with it's 41mpg (U.S.) combined EU rating. It looks like this will definitely be an engine worth waiting for when it arrives on U.S. shores in 2010.

It would be totally awesome if subaru would built (maybe for North America) Ridgeline or Tacoma size Baja with FLAT-SIX-DIESEL with 6-speed manual or auto.
More truk-ish then original Baja;
graet aerodymanics, low center of gravity, AWD, great handling, great mpg, ...that is kick ass.

I would so get a Legacy diesel in a heartbeat! And hopefully it could be an easy to convert to run on SVO

I am a sube fan from way back. If EA81s weren't extinct, I might park my 21year old daily driver the 87 GL with an ea82. I despise the entire EJ series of engines (18 years of sube torture drifting by me (pun intended)... until I saw this diesel. Crazy cranks need a big spank. A diesel spark will do just that. Thay also shortened the crank (another bonus for something I didn't like). I am looking forward to it, even in my -25F winter time environment. I am sure it isn't as stubborn as an old record breaking mercedes...This is excellent for subaru and the boxer world.

Subaru already sold diesels. But no opposite piston engines. AFAIR they sold some cars with VM Motori I3s (I4rs were too long) here in Europe.

In 24 months it will be in the new Legacy. lets hope it comes in styled as conservatively as the current one. The Forester wouldn't be a bad hauler with this motor either.

I love my Subaru and I'll wait as long as I need to for a diesel Outback. It's a shame Subaru is so far behind all other auto manufacturers in diesel sales. Biodiesel is already here and Subaru is going to miss the big bang of diesel sales in the U.S. I want one now, not in however many years it will be before it's available in the Outback. They should have taken the hint from VW and started ten years ago.
