BioFuel Energy Corp. will delay opening of two ethanol plants by 90 days

While ethanol prices might be trending upwards, there was some bad news from hopeful ethanol player BioFuel Energy Corp. this week. Two of the company's 115 mgpy plants that are under construction (in Wood River, Nebraska and Fairmont, Minnesota, I think) will open 90 days later than planned. The announcement doesn't give a precise explanation, but does say that "completion of the core production facilities and the instrumentation required to run it efficiently, which TIC [The Industrial Company] is building under turnkey contract, have fallen roughly three months behind schedule." Once completed, the plants will be able to make ethanol from corn for between $1.35 to $1.40 per gallon, according to the company's statement.
