Of the three new Chrysler concepts on revealed at the Detroit Auto Show, the Jeep Renegade was certainly the best received as far as its design. The compact off-roader is immediately recognizable as a Jeep, with its round headlights, seven slot grille and bulging fenders. The two-seater takes a BlueTec diesel range extended EV platform and adds Jeep's "Trail-Rating" to create an environmentally friendly off-roader.

An "environmentally friendly off-roader"? You must be joking.
This thing doesn't have even the slightest pretense of real-world utility, which is the excuse generally used to justify SUVs. ("I really need an SUV because one day I might go logging, or need to tow a Boeing.") On the contrary, this machine is just a big beach-buggy, and it has only one purpose, to tear up the countryside for the driver's fun. So please, what's environmentally friendly about that?

Nick: Where did you pull 'SUV' out of any part of this? This is a roadster with a 6-inch lift and off-road tires.
And 'tear up the country-side?' Please. I can't even kill the weeds in my lawn using chemicals that are likely far worse for the environment than this vehicle. Had they added some 36" chainsaws to either 'door' and ran it through a dense forest, you may have had a point. 'Beach buggy' on the other hand is spot-on.

People who work in and care for the ecosystems we love need a way to GET there - faster than walking, and don't even say "horses".
Where is all this vitriol when people make E85 Vipers and Vettes, and electric dragsters? Seems like this posts commenters would call that a waste of energy. (If you can't tell I don't agree with that).

One more thing, slope the hood and lower the springs on a Wrangler and what do you get? A roadster. Enzo Ferrari called the Willys the only true American sportscar after all.

Another nice concept, concept is the key word. I was looking at the "Gladiator" concept pick up. Stop showing us you can spend millions making concepts and start making progress. My 4.0 Wrangler is a gas nightmare but I still wouldn't trade it for a Hummer. I have owned Jeeps all my life but if they don't do something soon I'll start looking for a Nano Tata. Hey Jeep wake up before I have to switch loyalty.

Rojo...Dave, Good points. If even one person trades in a 4wd SUV gas hogging pig in order to occupy the one or two seats they ACTUALLY need in this miser, the concept will have been proven.

So lets me see if i have this right:
The car drives 40 miles on the pre-charged battery.
Then the diesel engine kicks in and it uses one gallon of gas to recharge the battery and go an extremely efficient 30 miles.
After that the battery kicks back in to go another 40 miles.
So the total trip on one gallon of gas is 110 miles.
Seems like a great idea to me. Chrysler should just make it now.
