NYPD to test Vectrix electric scooters next month
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, On Two Wheels, USA, Vectrix
The New York Police Department will road test four Vectrix electric scooters next month reports Newsday. Vectrix scooters have a range of 60 miles, a top speed of 60 MPH and, as Vectrix president Andrew MacGowen tells Newsday, his scooters are the first all-electric vehicles to be certified to travel on any highway, street or road. The NYPD currently has a handful of hybrid and flex-fuel vehicles but they are planning more ways to go green. Vectrix's silent running, plug-in scooters has advantages other than zero emissions though: "You could easily sneak up on somebody if they don't expect it" says Detective Derek Siconola, the happy guy on the Vectrix in the picture.

The NYPD has been riding Piaggio BV200s for a few years (not the most fuel-efficient scooter, but it beats the crud out of a Harley). Interestingly, the BV200s were used in an undercover attack on protesting cyclists during the 2004 Republican Convention. Good to know that *this* election, activists will be detained by stealthier, greener vehicles.

This is an excellent blog for electric bicycles. There are not too many around like this. Thanks for making this such an interesting subject. Oh, by the way, Wired Magazine has a great article on hybrid cars this month. (Jan 2008 issue).
God Bless,
Elmo

Piaggio builds fine aircraft, but the NYPD can keep their "metrosexual" scooters. I'll keep my "cruddy" '02 Sportster!

The Vectrix scooter has a real world range of only 28 miles to 38 miles at most per charge. Severe software issues and a group of "hype" only staff members, leaves me to wonder why would anyone waste their time on a 525 lb, $12,000 + scooter that stinks of problems?!
