Cycle World rides the Vectrix

Our site has not been short on news about the Vectrix electric scooter... but here's another report on it anyway. The fact that Cycle World found it fit to test ride and offer an opinion is a good thing, considering the fact that Cycle World is a major publication and their opinion is likely to carry a good deal of weight to many cyclists. So... what did they think?
Chris Worden of Cycle World found that the bike was comfortable and that it rode well. Being that the only comments that the rider made regarding the operation of the scooter was that it worked well, we'd say that the review was rather positive.

I ride about 400k a week to work and back, so I am keeping an eye on this one. The problem as it currently stands is simply one of range and charge - the 40 miles (that the rider got) is more than my daily commute. This means that it is not a viable form of transport for someone who is living in the burbs and working in the city.
Oh well, there are only improvements to be made in battery packs I guess. Lets hope they come soon enough for Vectrix to start making money.

If they can bump up the range to 100 (usable) miles, then I might go for it.
ABG guys, how come Vectrix doesn't show up on the ABG list of manufacturers?

After reading the article, it really does seem that "...the bike was comfortable and that it rode well" is Cycle World's way of saying "Yeah, I know.... But,(s)he has a nice personality!" 185 lbs of battery, total weight of 482 lb with only 27 HP means a pretty boring bike. If you really want to get into it, check out the comments to the story.... (Sound Off: What would it take to get you to buy an electric motorcycle?)

Vectrix, is a joke of a company along with their bike. Truth: it can only go a range of 30 to maybe 38 miles total! The bike weighs 525 lbs., and they are supposed to switch to Lithium batteries in 9 months, late 2008; so why waste you money now? $12,000 +, this is way too much for a scooter! Also, they have SEVERE software issues that give false readings for estimated range, after cruising along for 10 miles or so, it immediately drops down to zero miles range, and no battery left!!
Advice: stay away from Vectrix, they are selling the hype. The bike looks nice on the outside, but it doesn’t hold up in the real world!
