The 2008 Detroit Auto show concept from Jeep revives an old name on a whole new vehicle. The sub-compact sized Renegade is a sci-fi-styled off-roader with a range-extended electric power-train. Like the other two Chrysler concepts this year, the motor's electron supply comes from a lithium ion battery pack, this time sized for a forty

2008 Jeep® Renegade Concept

Totally. You're telling me I could be riding in a Halo jeep AND saving the environment? And I bet the electric motor(s) have tons of low speed torque, this beast would be awesome for off-road.
Please tell me 4-wheel hub motors for a full-on HUM-VEE-style clearance!? :)

Article says battery range 1 mile, press release says 40 miles. Did I misread something?

I am looking forward to seeing this vehicle. I am a long time Jeep fan, and the thought of a small open top Jeep sounds great. The problem is Jeep has had some great concepts in the past that NEVER make it to production. My personal favorite from about 6 years ago was the Jeep Willys concept. Once again a small open Jeep. Hopefully Cerberus can get one of these small fuel efficient concepts on the road. These two still look good today!

Well, mount a turret on the back and call it a Warthog!
In all seriousness, this is EXACTLY the direction in which Jeep needs to be heading. The only problem I see from an offroad perspective is that it looks like it's going to have independent suspension rather than solid axles. But that's just the dinosaur offroader in me.

Please Jeep, build this! Last year I bought a 4 door Wrangler JK but with my heavy foot I was getting 14 mpg. After I got it, I got a new job and am now driving over 30,000 miles a year and was spending over $500 a month just on gas. I had to sell it and bought a Honda Civic Hybrid. Counting the difference in the monthly payment and gas savings, I am saving $300 a month (even with my heavy foot I get 40 mpg). I love the Civic but greatly miss the open air go anywhere freedom of the Jeep. Please please build this, I will be the first in what I would imagine will be a very long line.

I agree with the poster on the source page... awful strong resemblance to the 2005 Jeepster concept car.

When I bought my Tacoma 6 years ago I swore it would be the last conventionally fueled vehicle. With the concept vehicles we've been seeing lately, I think I'll be able to live up to that pledge.
In this artist rendition, I don't see enough clearance in the wheel wells for an off road vehicle. I'm looking forward to seeing the concept vehicle.

Jeep,
I've been hanging on to my '93 wrangler, waiting for something like this. I swore I wouldn't buy another gas vehicle if I could help it. I'll jump all over this if you build it. Please stop teasing us with good stuff like this unless you plan on making it reality.
Ps. Keep it under $45k.

Yeah this looks pretty nice.
I've got a 06 Jeep Liberty Diesel that is converted to run on straight vegie oil. It off roads great and gets 36mpg on the highway, not bad for a 4x4 SUV.
The only thing that could make it better is if it was an electric diesel hybrid, I lose a lot of MPG stopping and starting.
