Renault says they might build electric car factory in Israel, partner with Project Better Place

Recently, we told you about rumors of a possible partnership between Renault and Project Better Place. Renault spokesperson, Rochelle Chimenes, confirmed Wednesday that Renault is talking to Project Better Place about a possible partnership and said that a deal could be announced in the first half of 2008. Chimenes also said Renault might build an electric car manufacturing plant in Israel. A Renault electric car factory in Israel is very possible because Israel may make electric car production tax free.

A Renault electric car factory in Israel? I mean...great...but where are the Big Six EV factories IN THE U.S.??? This auto show - touted as the year's "green" show - is just another pitiful display of the American car companies' backwardness and inertia. While all of the companies will undoubtedly show off prototypes and concept cars this week, where is the company that will actually commit to the production of vehicles that can save us from impending environmental doom? Wouldn't it be nice to see an American company revolutionize the industry by producing plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles, cutting vehicle emissions, and supporting an increase in fleetwide fuel economy? Wouldn't it be grand to see an American company commit to new domestic jobs in electric vehicle production facilities? Green jobs that reflect both the climate crisis and our newly discovered national green ethos? And why is it that the enviros are forced to sell cars for the car companies? Check this out: http://understory.ran.org/2007/11/14/ran-at-the-la-auto-show/ These guys are actually going to convert a Prius to a plug-in hybrid on Thursday at the auto show. You know there's something rotten in an industry when nonprofit organizations are doing more to innovate than the companies themselves. Are we going to have to ship our vehicles from Israel to buy cars that we want to drive?

So...all you can do is vote with your wallet. No new car until it runs on electricity. That's where the power lies.

Jodie, why single out American car companies? The fact is ALL car companies are by their nature slow moving and conservative. GM and others are planning
much of what you mention. The question is will we buy these vehicles? That remains to be seen. Toyota just introduced a even lager Sequoia, why is that? Because they know they make more profit from 1 truck than 2 Prius.

I've seen "jodie" post basically the same thing on four different threads, each with a different nickname. Rather spammy, IMO.
It takes years to bring new vehicles to market. That's just the facts. Even the likes of Tesla has spent many years of R&D to bring their new roadster to market--so many regulations to meet, after all. And even then, for EVs to gain any kind of market acceptance, performance and versatility will have to be very close to ICE vehicles.

At the conf call last week UQM CEO said they and Altairnano are in the process of scheduling meeting with the Project Better Place guys. And yes they are talking (recharge grid, battery..motors.....)
Altair at their cc alluded to a Euro agreement by Q1 08.
Well, the writing is on the wall imo.

I feel it is a very wise decision to make the production of the car tax free, and hope it will give a push to the whole concept.
