Click the Jetta SportWagen for a high-res galleryVolkswagen is featuring the new CleanTDI Jetta SportWagen at their booth in this year's SEMA show in Las Vegas. The SportWagen is powered by the new fifty state-legal 2.0L CleanTDI diesel that will be going on sale next March. The new engine has 140 hp and 235 lb-ft of torque which, in combination with the six-speed DSG gearbox, should provide plenty of performance and great fuel economy. The SEMA show car has had its ride height dropped so that the 19 inch rims really fill up the wheel wells. Extra stopping power comes courtesy of a Brembo brake kit.

VOLKSWAGEN SHOWCASES CLEAN DIESEL AND PERSONALIZED PERFORMANCE AT SEMA
Three new specialty vehicles highlight personalization, performance and clean diesel
LAS VEGAS – Volkswagen of America, Inc. showcases its commitment to clean diesel performance and unique vehicle personalization with three new concepts on display at the 2007 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show.
Volkswagen's Dieselution Tour, a mobile marketing exhibit showcasing clean diesel, will be staged outdoors in the plaza and will provide the backdrop for the latest in clean diesel performance and unique Volkswagen personalization.
For the 2007 SEMA show, Volkswagen blends concept car design, aftermarket tuning and creativity to illustrate how their already exciting line-up can be transformed into unique high-performance, one-of-a-kind vehicles.
2009 Jetta TDI SportWagen
Powered by the 2.0L Clean Diesel TDI, delivering 140 horsepower and 235 ft.-lbs. of torque, the new Jetta SportWagen does not conform to old station wagon stereotypes.
Using readily available body components and finished in custom paint and graphics, this Jetta TDI SportWagen demonstrates what can be done to personalize a Jetta. To reinforce the sportin this wagon, the Jetta's underpinnings were upgraded by H&R Springs to lower its ride height, and make its handling razor sharp.
The Jetta TDI SportWagen remains firmly planted with 19 inch Sportec Wheels and Yokohama Tires wrapped around an upgraded Brembo brake kit, providing high performance stopping power. Hella provides up-level lighting components that add a unique flair to the styling.
2008 Passat Station Wagon
With the North-American debut of the Passat Wagon Hi-Def styling package, Volkswagen shows that the need for practicality doesn't mean sacrificing an enthusiast's desire for personalization. The exterior Hi-Def styling package is complemented with European specification Hella lighting and 18-inch Velos wheels wrapped in Nitto performance tires.
Demonstrating that your kids can live the enthusiast lifestyle along with you, Recaro child seats help provide a safe seating environment in the event their parents decide to responsibly explore the performance of Volkswagen's fantastic
2.0 L TFSI engine, rated at 200 horsepower and 207 ft-lbs. torque. This concept Passat shows how an enthusiast can have their cake, and carry it, too.
2007 GTI 4 door
Using the GTI high-performance 2.0 L TFSI engine with 200 horsepower and 207 ft.-lbs. torque mated to a six speed transmission, the team mounted R32 brakes and rotors, Volkswagen lowering springs and a custom Vibrant Performance center exit exhaust. With the availability of both Thunder Bunny and R32 components, the GTI was dressed with a new Thunder Bunny front bumper, flared side skirts, and R32 rear valance, creating a sporty and aggressive street style. Completing the exterior styling is custom Hella lighting, darkened tail lamps, and soon to be introduced 18-inch Karthoum wheels finished in black with machined highlights. The wheels are wrapped in Nitto high-performance tires.
The interior was upgraded with styling and protection accessories meant to highlight the GTI's sporty interior. Leaving the original head unit intact, Rockford Fosgate integrated a new powerful sound system in the GTI. To capitalized on the GTI's new audio equipment, Volkswagen's Electronic Research Laboratory installed its latest iPod® adapter system which easily installs into most Volkswagen models with satellite radio. This new plug and play adapter allows users to control iPod® functions through their factory radio, and see artist, song, and playlist information.

I've been waiting for the Jetta wagon w/a diesel, but another blog stated the VW intends to charge a $4000 premium for the diesel.
The EPA city mpg of the Jetta sedan is 21 mpg assume the diesel does 30% better thats approx. 27 mpg. At 12,000 miles per year that is 571 or 444 gallons a year. Its tough predicting fuel costs so lets say the cost of diesel and gas is the same $3.00/gal.
Buying the diesel will save you $378/year with a payback of 10.5 years. Since both vehicles are relatively the same in terms of emissions the environmental benefit would be in terms of few barrels of oil produced to run this car. With a 20 year operation expectancy that would be 461 barrels.
If the rumored option cost is $4K, I believe I can get a better financial AND environmental return by buying the gas Jetta (if that is what I want) and investing the $4K differently.

Another variable that you would have to look at is resale value. After 5 years, the resale difference between a gas and diesel version could easily be half of that or even more if gas/fuel pricing keeps advancing.
The added value for the diesel in my 8 year old Ram is about the same as what the original option price was.

jim, Your assumption of 27mpg for the tdi city mileage is way off. My '02 beetle tdi consistantly gets 40 mpg city with lead foot driving. The new tdi's are rated between 40 and 45 city. DT is correct about the tdi selling for more in the used lot. We have two Jetta tdi's on our lot that are getting at least $2500 more re-sale and they will sell in a matter of weeks not months like other Jetta's. We had a 2006 Beetle tdi that stayed on the lot for only 4 days and it sold for almost new retail. As soon as they come in on end of lease or trade in I call my list of clients looking for them. I show them before they get detailed and prepped for resale because they will be gone if I don't.

Jim, the information we got directly from VW's Keith Price is that the new Jetta should get real world mileage in the mid-40s and the price premium should only be about $2,000. http://www.autobloggreen.com/2007/09/28/abg-driving-impression-2008-volkswagen-jetta-cleantdi-6spd-dsg/

Argh! But what about the Golf TDI? (Rabbit)
Atleast VWoA is being less stupid than Audi and bringing a smaller engine TDI first.
I still wish they would bring the smaller options.. From the VW UK website:
Bluemotion 1.4L Polo 5 door: 46/69 city/highway, 58.8 combined. 104g/km CO2
