BREAKING: All Volkswagens to have hybrid option
Volkswagen's head of product development, Ulrich Hackenber, told Automobilewoche magazine that VW plans to offer all its upcoming models with either full or partial hybrid engine options. VW is also considering a fully electric motor for its new small cars. VW currently does not offer a hybrid car for sale, but doees plan to release hybrids next year. VW currently offers very green cars under its Bluemotion brand and plans to expand Bluemotion to all the cars it makes. Enjoy video of a 2002 teaser ad for the new Beetle below the fold.

That's a big dicision from volkwagen and it is not pospone in the next decade. I hope it's true.

The article says that VW's rear-engined small car (à la the 'Up!' shown at Frankfurt) is coming to market in 2011. I hope that's not true. If it is, then VW could again end up behind the curve, product-wise.
Also, what do they mean by partial hybrid?

VW is also rather heavily involved in offering diesel versions of their cars. Does this mean that they will offer diesel-electric hybrids?

Partial hybrid means start/stop system to shut the engine when you are at a stop light.

Snowdog, are you sure about that? I thought they might have meant something like GM hybrid which is just simply and cheap but still has an actual electric engine attached to the drive train.

Hybrid option is good news. Hybrid Diesel would be fantastic. Your diesels are becoming a respected product in the US where diesels have a negative consumer reputation. Pricing critical. I'm waiting for the product...diesel, but diesel hybrid preferred. "CR"
